Please chance me!
I have a 2220 SAT superscored.
I have a 3.9 unweighted GPA and a 5.0+ weighted GPA.
I am a captain for Cross Country and First Chair for the orchestra. I participate in the district orchestra along with organizing a school quartet. I have volunteered for 150+ hours at the local hospital. Please chance me!!

Definitely a competitive candidate, especially for ED. My guess is 50/50, but some will depend on your geographic location, school of interest test, and what you want to study, as well as essays/rec’s etc.

What is your class rank or estimated percentile?

I am in Pennsylvania. I love Duke and I plan on studying Biology with a concentration on Infectious Disease. I am expecting good recommendations. However, I have been suspended during my freshman year. It was a dumb mistake

I am also in the top 2% of my class of a class of 334

The Dean of Admissions at Duke has said they allow ONE large dumb mistake. They realize we’re all human and teenagers sometimes don’t have the best judgement. The key is that you learned from it and didn’t do it again. If you can explain the suspension and how you’ve grown from it, it shouldn’t be detrimental to your application. Duke doesn’t allow two dumb mistakes, though, because then that shows you didn’t learn from it and it’s a pattern. Everything else looks pretty solid - good luck.

You’ll be fine. Good stats.

I don’t see any stats at all… From what you’ve posted, all I can see is the standard applicant. You don’t appear to have many extra-curricular activities to show that you’re well rounded and you don’t have anything that sticks out as a passion, if you’ve won music competitions, solo ensemble festivals etc. list them. What about your classes? Take a look at my chance post for an idea of a format.

PLEASE CHANCE ME: I WILL CHANCE BACK

THANKS TO PROSPECTIVEDOC for providing the structure to this outline

My advice - try to do something new this summer, either find an internship type job related to your chosen field of study or a different volunteer position that isn’t something you’ve done before. If you can back up the volunteer stuff with some sort of fundraising that would help. Does your Chemistry Club compete in any kind of Science Bowl type competitions? If not, try to get that started at your high school. Starting something new shows initiative and colleges are looking for that kind of kid. Duke is also big on finding kids with community service on their resume.

That said, you look like a strong candidate to me.

Thank you very much!
Addressing your three concerns, I have founded a club/tutoring program at my high school. I also applied to the Summer Internship Program at NIH but was not selected. Instead, I will be traveling to China this summer to teach English at a university. Also, I have been volunteering at a local hospital. Do these address your concerns of “starting something new, doing something new this summer, and kids with community service”?

^ Yes. It all sounds very good to me! Good luck.
