Chance me for ED at Duke?

I will be applying this upcoming fall. I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA, and a 33 ACT score. I am in the top 50,000 for the National Merit Scholarship, but I doubt I'll be a semifinalist. I plan to be a Biophysics major, and ultimately to go to medical school.

I am a North Carolina student, and attend an early college in my area (I receive an Associate's Degree at the same time as my high school degree). The credits don't transfer, but naturally the workload is rigorous. I have taken Calculus I and General Physics I at the end of Junior year, and I plan to take up to Calculus III and General Physics II by the end of senior year. This is in preparation for both my intended major and medical school, though I will have to retake these classes.

I don't have much in the extracurricular department, because my school doesn't have the funding for sports/clubs and I get home after 6pm from school. However, I have been on the Quiz Bowl team for all of high school and am the captain. We have come close (within 1 question) of going to national's multiple times.

I have played piano competitively since I was seven or eight. I have competed at state level multiple times, but no further. This summer I am volunteering 12 hours a week at my local hospital, and hopefully will have the opportunity to job shadow a radiologist (the specialty I'm currently looking at).

My recommendations from my counselor will be absolutely amazing, and it should be great from my teacher as well. I'm good at writing essays, so hopefully that won't be an issue, and I should be getting an interview as well.

You look pretty good when it comes to chances.

So are you applying to Pratt or trinity

^ wondering same thing. God, I feel like we ask this to everyone who ED chances. @1995andrew

Haha very true SouthernBelle. Just want to see who have as competition XD

Haha my thoughts exactly! :)

You need a hook. 90% of Duke apps. are A students, middle 30 ACT’s, play the piano, on the academic team, volunteer at the hospital, lots of AP’s and are pre-med…everyone looks the same on paper. Living in NC may help you.

Doesnt living out of state help you?

Well it depends. A lot of the most competitive schools want kids from every state. Duke is loaded from California, the Mid-Atlantic States, and New England so if you live somewhere other than that, I think it would help you. Duke also always takes like 11%-13% of its class from NC so for Duke it helps to live in-state.

Darn, I wish I didn’t live in California and lived in Montana or Wyoming. Shucks. :(

^ haha I really wouldn’t worry about it that much. Geographic diversity is not nearly as important as many other aspects of your application.

Just saying, NC is almost 6 times more represented at Duke than the US average.
It may not be much, but considering the calibre of recent applicants, any automatic advantage over the competition has got to be significant.
