Hi! I’m a white female.
GPA: 3.83/4.0 (I know- not that great. Trying to improve this year).
Class load this year: AP Chem, AP Euro, Advanced Spanish, Advanced English, Honors treble choir (highest choir class offered), Math Honors (this is middle level math- hoping to be able to take the advanced math next year, to show I can handle the AP math courses. Also I think it’s too easy for me).
Haven’t taken the ACT yet- But aiming for a 34+ : Reviewing from a review book, hiring a tutor this summer, going to take some practice tests, etc.
Extracurriculars:
I’ve been in a choir for 10 years (won’t say which one because it would reveal where I live)- Ranked top 10% in my section (5-10 out of 65), performed at the White House and UN Headquarters in Geneva with them. Would say about 10-12 hours/week. (sorry if it sounds like I’m bragging, this is just what I’ll probably put in to the common app)
Piano for 7 years at a conservatory. Since the conservatory has “high expectations”, I would say it’s about 6-7 hours/week of practicing
Girl Scouts for 11 years- Do activities once a month
Treble choir for 4 years- Served as section leader and librarian
Women’s Ensemble for 3 years- Competitive (20 people try out and only 5-7 get in). It’s another choir. It’s about 2 hours/week
Project Support for 2 years- Participate in activities for people with disabilities.
VP of Food for Life- Health club where I promote healthy living
I’m also planning on making an autism awareness group, where I go to different elementary schools and talk about autism/lead simulations on autism, since I have a severely autistic sister.
Volunteering:
Volunteer at a hospice 2 hours/week (thinking this could also be a hook since not many kids from my high school do this?)
Volunteer as a facilitator for an assembly at my school- about once every two months, I visit freshmen classrooms and talk about abuse/bullying
And I volunteer at church occasionally (maybe once every two months again).
So far, I have around 100+ hours.
Awards:
None (so far?)
Summer activities:
I participated in a program where Iraqi high school students came to the US to learn about social entreprenureship (sp?). Only three kids from my school were selected to go. We interacted with them and also learned about social entreprenureship
Shadowed a few doctors- A dermatologist, internal medicine doctor, and an infectious disease doctor
I’m applying for a few internships/jobs for this summer (one at a hospital, three at NASA, and one at a university- of course I won’t do all three but I’ll pick one) and a summer teaching job, where I teach kids from disadvantaged backrounds.
Hooks: None
Fantastic ec’s, i know it’s a long way until then but i would be sure to include you performing at the white house. Don’t worry about your gpa, it’s competitive as long as your classes were rigorous. If you can get that 34 on the act you’ll be in good shape for cornell! Good luck!
@ivydream210 thanks! good luck to you too! your ec’s are amazing as well! Luckily I did that performance during high school so I can include it
Could you mention your weighed gpa. I would say it’s a high match or low reach depending on the competitiveness of your hs
@Gunblood222 Sure. GPA is 4.3 weighted. According to NAviance, the average GPA for my school is 4.4 weighted for ED. Yeah I would say my school is pretty competitive there’s a number of students who get into good schools every year.
Not sure about class rank though, school doesn’t offer that.
Why are you predicting a 34+?
And what Cornell school will you be applying to?
@jamesjunkers not saying anything a little less is a bad score but it seems to be a good “median”
Probably CAS or human ecology. I want to go into premed.
@PaigeyPoo189: The 25th-75th percentile for the class of 2018 was 30-34, the median (and mean) was 32. But I’m asking why you think you can get a score equal to the top 1% of the world. Have you taken practice tests and consistently scored 33-35?
@jamesjunkers Yeah I’ve taken practice tests and made sure that I’ve studied at least one hour a day
@PaigeyPoo189, Okay good luck! I wasn’t trying to be rude, but rereading my previous messages I may have come across that way (sorry!). You have a great shot at Cornell, but as I’m sure you know, it’s a complete crapshoot
do u sell girl scout cookies @PaigeyPoo189
@jamesjunkers sorry for being harsh as well! haha you’re OK those tests do take a lot of studying thank you
@thegrant yeah I do haha cookie sales won’t start until a couple months. i heard there are going to be some new flavors this year along with the classics
@PaigeyPoo189, new flavors!? Tell us more! Tell us more!
@jamesjunkers They are gluten free flavors: Toffee-tastic (has toffee bits)- sounds gross to me but we all have our different opinions, Trios (has peanut butter, chocolate chips, and whole-grain oats), and Rah-Rah Raisins (oatmeal raisin cookie with yogurt flavored chunks)
I’ve noticed that the classics always stay since they’re so delicious (my favorites are Samoas and Tagalongs), but the new ones aren’t usually so popular, like the cranberry and dulce de leche cookies. But who knows, maybe this year, it’ll be different?
I think you have a FAIR chance at Cornell, your EC’s help you stand out. I’m thinking you have a 30-40% chance of getting in ED.
@Gunblood222 ok thanks for the input! I’ll try my best to improve my grades
@PaigeyPoo189 hook me up with a deal on the thin mints and samoas pls i will lov u forever
lol
but yea if u have the 3.8gpa/34act and good essay then ur probably getting in
@thegrant haha ok I’ll try but sorry I probably would eat all the samoas before they get to you because they’re one of my favorite girl scout cookies
thanks
@PaigeyPoo189 yo can u tell me how u people score so high on standardized tests like idek how somebody can get a 34 without looking directly at an answer sheet ---- i got a 1400 on my first sat lmao and a 21 on my first act hahahahahhahahahhahahahah
took me literally 200 hours of hardcore cramming on sat books to raise it up to a ~2100 which is still bullsh*t cause other kids seem like they are born to take these tests — isnt a 34 the equivalent to like a 2300 on the sat lmao wow
@thegrant I know it’s ridiculous. My dad got a really good score on the SAT without studying yet my mom had to take the ACT three times to get it up to a decent score. Totally unfair.
Oh no I didn’t actually take it yet although I took practice tests. You just have to practice a lot you’re going to do pretty bad at first. At least 10 minutes a day will make a difference. Lol I got a 20 the first time I took a practice ACT.
