For the first time ever, I’m not so certain about this ED application. I think you’re the most average student if I’m being honest.

I see some good points like you’re great Maths scores everywhere, excellent SAT IIs, family background could act as a small hook, good GPA and rank. However, being an Asian with not so good SAT Reasoning, APs (especially when you’re doing APs in school), little awards, not focused ECs and average essays and recommendations…kind of harm you.

I think it boils down to if they see anything special from your essays and recommendation. Oh and the school you’re applying to. If it’s Weinberg, the above things I mentioned will hold true. If difficult schools like Medill or the sciences, it’ll be even harder to get in Good luck!!

I think NU is a reach for you. As the above poster has said, your SAT I is average. And your senior course load is pretty light (by my count). However, I want to point out the good parts. Your SAT II are phenomenal :). Also, your ec’s are pretty good. I think they show leadership and dedication. But what do you want to major in? Mathematics? Your ec’s don’t really reflect that but neither do mine

thank you @alafae and @queserrva for chancing me.
I hope I could get opinions from other people too. @alafae - My country Myanmar as you know is a developing country and we do not have any international awards or competitions here.The awards that I received were usually inter-school and school-related rewards. There is no USAMO or intel or other international awards in Myanmar.
In terms of EC, I forgot to add that I play piano in school events if that would make any difference…

@queserrva I am planning to major in biological science… I know that people who choose science majors are usually top-notch students with all those stellar scores, essays, and EC. But Northwestern is my dream school so I applied there. I have a very low chance of getting in regarding my low SAT 1 score. That’s what I am worried about.

Thanks for the clarification @CodeBreaker. While we can hope that Adcoms understand your situation and will allow your grades and ECs to a certain extent, keep in mind that they do have other outstanding applicants that you have to compete with. I suggest you find something to stand out, or maybe take a step forward on something you think you’re best at. If it’s piano (I play the piano too so I understand), then try being super good at it and do something special and join some international competitions outside of your country. That’s what I did and I never regretted it.

My school’s a British styled school, so I have no whatsoever US application or AP classes/supports. Neither do I have the chances to join certain activities because my school is extremely focused on academics, but I took initiatives to self study APs, take professional music classes and participate in competitions, etc.

Show them you’re special apart from your background. Give them a reason to want you.

@alafae I guess it’s too late now… So far, I have only applied to Northwestern because it’s my dream school. If I get accepted, then I would be pretty happy.
You are right I should have competed in competitions outside of my country but I am pretty sure my parents won’t let me. Asian parents you know?

@CodeBreaker Your credentials are in the ball park of what NU looks for. Also, you are from Myanmar and I assume not many apply from there (esp. ED), so that should be to your advantage. I am not certain whether the need for financial aid for international students has any bearing on the admission chances. Good Luck!

I think you are an average applicant in the international student pool… but I still have to say you have a good chance of getting in. Lets just wait and see, the results will be released in 8 days(if this year’s notification is still on Dec. 12th like last year’s)

@CodeBreaker
Since you’re international, your admission basically depends on whether or not you need financial aid or no. If you want aid, then that drops your chances somewhat. Not significantly but noticeably. The SAT is okay… NU (relatively) doesn’t have crazy SAT scores from applicants like the Ivies do, and the senior year schedule is light indeed. So Idk, wouldn’t be surprised if you got in or rejected. Without knowing your essays I’d say 2/5 chance? But DO NOT take my words for it.

O… but then I am a permanent resident of US… so does that make me need-blind or need aware in terms of financial aid? I asked Northwestern and they told me it’s need-blind. So in terms of admissions, will they consider me an international student or ???

@NorthernKev
Those electives that I took didn’t seem easy at all. Maybe in terms of grading. For instance in International Relations, we got tons of paperwork. More work than AP World History. I sometimes regret taking those electives and ending up with a bad grade. It chops my GPA off.
