Lastly, Wharton says they’re looking for calculus. I took precalculus in sophomore year and got 2 A’s. In junior year I took BC and got a B first semester, an A second semester, and a 5 on the AP test. Will the B hurt my chances significantly?

Hi! Solid scores and ECs. I think you are very well qualified as most candidates. It will all come down to the voice you expressed in your essays and whether Wharton committee deems you as a “fit.” And if you are not accepted to Wharton it will not be because of the B, especially if you reported the 5 on the AP test. Good luck

I’d be the first to admit that I don’t know what Wharton looks for in their applicants but I thought they look for business experience. I’m not seeing much of this in what you posted but correct me if I’m wrong.

Here’s what Wharton’s undergraduate admissions site says:

Are leaders, movers and shakers, and will make an impact
Have strong academic records
Have taken the most rigorous curriculum offered by their school
Have taken calculus during high school
Are well rounded
Have a genuine interest in business, Wharton, and Penn

Here’s what U Penn’s general admission site says about Wharton:

An interest in business to fuel positive change to advance the world’s economic and social well-being
Demonstrated leadership
A strong preparation in mathematics, particularly calculus

bump

One of my good friends got admitted into the Wharton Business School and what really got him in was how he showed an initiative in terms of passion and interest for the business field. He literally was solely responsible for turning our FBLA chapter in our high school from bottom tier to one of the best in the state competitive wise as well as from a 10 member club to a 150+ member club in a span of two years. Ivy Leagues definetly look for well rounded classes of students, but this part “Founder and president of a charity club that has done national and international work and raised thousands of dollars for charitable causes such as orphanages or indigenous tribes.” definetly shows some business savviness. So count that as a huge plus!

Grade inflation

For Wharton, is it important that I focus on business related ECs, rather than just any EC? I am in Junior year, Wharton is my first choice, so may apply ED. Have about 11 months now, must do something quickly.

I was thinking of starting a business blog (or may be make it a YouTube channel, since blogs are too ubiquitous), but I have to start from scratch, and also many students will be having blogs.
I also subtitle YouTube videos, I can may be focus my time there, but then that isn’t really business related, though it is unique, and will demonstrate uniqueness and innovation, a skill that business leaders need.

What do you guys prefer? Or may be do you recommend I do both the blog, and subtitle videos on YouTube, then I do not know whether I will be able to focus completely on both, though I may be able to.

Thank you for your kind and honest help!

@BharadwajS Wharton seems to highly favor business used to advance society in some form whether it be educationally or socioeconomically. I believe a business blog would definitely show interest, but maybe if you do a YouTube channel, monetize your videos and donate the money you get to some sort of cause. Thats my suggestion, and good luck!

@surfing777 Wow great ECs and awards!! I really think you’re a very strong candidate, and your URM status helps too. Haha my app is so much weaker comparing to yours. If you wrote great essays and Penn likes them, you are golden

I was accepted! Thank you everyone!

Congratulations OP!
