Essays and Recs
• Lets say letters of rec are a solid 8/10. I know the teachers very well and was very involved in their classes
• My essay is a good 7-8/10 and touches on why my GPA sophomore year is so low - basically about dealing with suicide sophomore year so I think it sets me apart.
I know Emory is a reach because of my GPA. If anything, I’ll probably be waitlisted.
Your standardized test scores aren’t great but they’re pretty solid. Tbh I don’t see a focus in your extra curriculars and rather they are focused on sports? Can I ask what your major is?
Oh and if you have the time, would you mind looking at my thread for my chances at Emory too? Haha that would be much appreciated.
When the Emory rep came to my daughter’s school, she told her Emory doesn’t focus too much on freshman grades because a lot of kids are on the struggle bus then. They like upward trends. That is bad for my D because she made very good grades freshman year and throughout high school.
@peterin1 I visited last year and spoke with an admissions counselor about the core classes. I haven’t declared a major. Do you think I’d be more competitive with Oxford? It’s ideally the one I’m leaning towards.
I don’t know how I’ve forgotten this but I’ve played the cello since age 10, played in thestring orchestra fr/soph year and successfully auditioned for the chamber orchestra jr/sr year.
@peterin1 we were told by admissions that Emory computes their own unweighted GPA leaving out many of the electives that may boost a GPA (band, music, PE, etc). This way, we were told, it puts everyone on more even ground when comparing. Now, I’m not sure if they actually do this, but that is what we were told…
