Chance me for Engineering School

I am currently aNJ resident and junior. I am interested in either Computer or Electrical Engineering. My stats are

2080(superscore) 770R 670M 640W
top 9% of school
3.96 un- weighted 4.80weighted and so far straight A's for junior year which are AP and honor classes
next year I will be taking 3 more AP classes

clubs including next year:

TEAM 4 years
Interact - 4 years including senior year, President
key club - 4years which 3 of them I was a Marketing officer

Golf team 4 years

150 hours of community service
worked fo 2 summers

NHS

attending Stevens Institue summer program for engineering and sciences

College choices
University of Maryland college park
Penn state
Stevens Institute
Rutgers
TCNJ
Villanova
Univ of Penn

Can you let me know my chances and do you think I should take the SAT one more time in senior year. I already took it 3 times. I will be taking the ACT in 2 weeks

You can get into all of them except Penn.
However, why is TCNJ on the list? It may be a great college but very weak in engineering department especially compared to others on your list. Rutgers is so so.

If you got SAT (in one sitting) to about 2150-2200 you could get into all of them…do you still have time to retake SAT? Because your score is good but that’s the only thing holding you back

I also think you can get into all except UPenn. As for the SAT, if you really think you can score better, then by all means take it again. However, my guess is that by the third time it’s probably not going to get much higher.

TCNJ has been suggested by many people my parents know but wasn’t too sure about the graduates of TCNJ. the school visits always make them sound so promising

I could still take the SAT in the fall before I put in my applications and I just might because a lot of posts mention to be above 700 in math. I will also need merit aid and what I have heard Penn State does not give much and I was very impressed with their engineering department.

I am also sitting for 2 subject tests next week (math 2 and history)

Anyone get into any of these schools with these stats and receive merit aid?

any other suggestions of college choices with these stats. I am very interested in the co-op or internship programs. I have not visited any schools north of NJ. I might apply to Northeastern but didn’t know my chances.

I also forgot to mention, I would like to stay with in 5 hours of NJ, any thoughts on Virginia Tech?

TCNJ is a great teachers college. But hohum for engineering. It has an awesome campus.
What you need to do is contact the placement offices of each target college and get info such as: List of companies that interview on campus, list of companies recent engineering grads got jobs, range of salaries, etc. You need to decide if those companies are who you want to work for.
The placement office is more important than a college ranked a few notches higher.

Go to collegedata dot com. They have admissions stats as well as financial aid/merit money stats for just about every college.

How do you contact the placement offices and do I have to wait till I am a senior?

Each college has a directory. Call admissions for the placement office number.
Do it now. No need to wait. When you get the info you may knock some colleges off your list.
Sometimes, the engineering departments keep those stats also. Call both. You want specific info not general BS.
btw… lots of great engineering colleges within 5 hrs. I’m surprised Lehigh is not on the list.
Get ranking info of engineering and computer/electrical.

thank you very much for your help and advice. I have seen Lehigh, Bucknell and Univ of Delaware on posts but have not been able to visit them yet.

5 hours from New Jersey is Boston. Have you ever consider any of the Boston colleges?

Delaware has a strong engineering department.

I am not as familiar with the Northern schools. Didn’t think my stats would qualify me for Northeastern or Boston University. I seem to have been drawn to the 'campus ’ feel more than the departments scattered through out the city. My parents advised me that I have to try and find schools that will offer aid since I have noticed a lot of the engineering schools are more expensive than liberal arts schools.

So if you had to make a list, what order would you put it in,?

Univ of Maryland
Penn State
Univ of Delaware
Univ of Penn (in case I score higher if I re-take SAT)
Rutgers
Lehigh
Bucknell
Northeastern
Stevens Institute
Villanova

thanks for any input.

Hard to answer that question. You need to look at what your parents are willing to pay and how much loans you are willing to take. Lots of stuff to look at. Some schools have a high sticker price but give lots of aid (free money) ie. Lehigh. Rutgers has a lower price but gives out less. You won’t know until you apply and hear back. You can look at college data dot com to get a feel what colleges give out in terms of aid or free money.

So, my list will be based upon paying full sticker price (no aid). (COA per college data)

  1. Rutgers (29k)
  2. Maryland (43k)
  3. Delaware (43k)
  4. PSU (45k)
  5. Lehigh (57k)
  6. Bucknell (61k)
  7. Villanova (59k)
  8. Stevens (60k)
Bottom Line, it will depend upon what type of package you can get. Don’t judge by sticker price as those are inflated for the most part.
If all 8 were same COA, Lehigh would be #1 on my list.

bump, any other suggestions for me to look into…thank you

All in but UPenn. Also Look at UIUC and Georgia Tech

I would say you are in at all of them except for perhaps UPenn. Ivies should be reaches for everyone, regardless of their stats. Have you considered UIUC or Purdue? Oh and I recommend that you apply to Northeastern (they have one of the best co-op programs in the country). With a gpa like yours and a pretty decent SAT score I would say you have a good chance of getting in. Good luck! Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1655558-need-some-advice.html#latest

I received my scores from my ACT and have a composite of 32, my math was 30, but I guess I wasn’t as prepared as I thought for my subject math 2 and received a low 600. I read on another thread that if you choose to send your SAT scores they will still see my Subject tests even if they superscore.

Also, since I can only take one more test before November deadlines should I retake the SAT to bring up my math or retake the subject SAT since some schools want 2 subject tests especially math 2 or just send my ACT scores?

bump
