Hi,
I'm an african american female, aged thirteen, who hails from South Carolina.
I'm currently a student at Exeter's summer school, and I absolutely adore the harkness table... What do my chances look like?
My grades are usually above a 95(I dont have the exact grades with me)
I'm the captain of my school basketball, volleyball and track and field teams.
In this coming year I'm going to participate in NJHS, Yearbook staff, write it to win it, potentially student council, and potentially the academic quiz team or math counts.
My essays should go well, since writing is my academic forte...
I took the SAT in 7th grade, and I made a 600 on reading comprehension, a 620 on writing, and a 10/12 on my essay. I'd rather not talk about math. however, do you think I will do well on the SSAT with my previous scores?
I won't qualify for financial aid, because my parents gross salary is around 300k-400k a year.
Lastly, I'm only fluent in english, but I'm studying spanish at school and through rosetta stone(though I realize rosetta stone won't make me completely fluent)
Oh yeah, and I also play clarinet in my school band, but I don't think it will help me get in, since I'm usually third or fourth chair.
Thank you.

Hey there,
I’m guessing that you’re class of 2016? Or maybe you’re 2015 too. So long has you have straight As from sixth grade on, your recommendations are good, (so remember, suck up to your teacher) your interview goes well, and you can try to squeeze in some volunteering hours, winning an award or prize or trophy, or take up a hobby you love before you submit your application, it’s safe to say you got it. They’re looking not only for brains and talent, but for leadership and other admirable traits. Also, I heard those who don’t need Financial Aid are in a less competitive zone than those who do. It’s so impressive that you’re the captain of that many teams. If you’re worried about the SSAT, there are study guides available at the official site and others. The math I heard isn’t too bad. They try and trick you a few times, but I suggest you buy one of those strategic study guides. But if you’re in the summer school and the teachers know you, then it looks like you’ll have an advantage. Good job!

well i havent won any MAJOR awards, like the scholastic art alliance awards, but i did win offensive player of the year in basketball and the field award in track, and i also got the highest grade average for social studies, english, and science, if that counts for anything.
and yes, im 2016.

I’m in no position to chance but you should look into other schools too- a lot include the “harkness” method but they just don’t use the term since it was made for exeter. Also the SAT you took is very different from the SSAT. The SSAT you want to study for most definitely from what I’ve heard.

i like deerfield a lot too

I’m a recent admitted exonian for upper year which is arguably the hardest. My one advice keep your grades uP and just be you

If you want, you can ask deerfield to send you some application materials. Or you can look at the viewbook online. Also, a lot of people replied to my post about schools other than HADES (Hotchkiss, Andover, Deerfield, Exeter, St. Paul) but they’re college prep and some are harkness also.

You look like you have a nice chance. Be nice to your teachers during the summer, recommendations can help, even if they’re not the teachers from the full year.

By the way, I’m at Exeter Summer School too, we should meet sometime XD
