And I am not sure how much of a "hook" it is, but it definitely is a different type of hobby that I am considering focusing my essay on.

I am a white male teenager, not the typical person you would expect to have a 150 square foot raised bed vegetable garden in their backyard. I grow 20+ Vegetables every year for the past 5 years, also have some fruit trees. Do it by myself, bring produce to my kitchen- I grow heirloom and rare varieties, practice various farming techniques such as the Native American three sisters method and intercropping- Grow organic, and grow some exotic looking veggies like orange, purple, and pink tomatoes and "dragon tongue" purple streaked beans....all types of interesting things that are truly my passion. I follow the frost dates like a yellow brick road. It's basically what I wait for all winter. It's weird, its interesting, I like talking about it, any feedback?

I think you’re GPA is a bit low, but your Test score and essay should get you in.

@BerserkLemur - I’ve seen people use your instead of you’re, but this is the first time I’ve seen someone use you’re instead of your.

@magnezin - Your GPA is not bad, it’s actually pretty solid, so I wouldn’t be overly worried. The GPA you see online for GT is weighted (but they’ve discontinued that). Just make sure you apply early action, and keep your grades absolutely top notch during the first semester. Remember, GTech likes Science and Math, so don’t forfeit your Physics B, Bio, and Calc grades for Guitar or Religions.

Your ACT looks really good, especially since you did amazingly well on Math and Science. GTech doesn’t require Subject Tests, so only submit those that are truly spectacular, so far which would be Math II. GTech doesn’t give credit for any subject tests beside Chem and English, so I don’t think your history one will count for much, nor your Bio (Bio simply because it’s not that high). Try to get at least a 730 on chem, which will put you in the category to get credit for Chem 1310, since you didn’t take AP Chem. GTech likes it when students come in with credit, it allows them to graduate faster, and get rid of the false notion that it takes 15 years to graduate from GT.

Your ECs are great, and your essay topic sounds fantastic. It’s not a hook, a hook is if you’re URM, athlete, or legacy. But it’s definitely different and not expected for someone with your demographics. Definitely talk about it, write your essay way in advance to make sure you have plenty of time to revise it, and best of luck.

Do they even see first semester senior year? do they see first quarter?

ALSO: Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

They see your 12th grade first semester schedule, they don’t see your grades unless you apply regular decision/get deferred. So hopefully they never need to see your senior year grades haha.

Good luck. Threads like this make me very happy that I’m done with HS and the admissions process.

@FreeLancerMarine, how do they calculate GPA now?

@hardestgameever - I’m not entirely sure about that, all I know for certain is that they don’t recalculate GPA like they used to. They may have gotten rid of that altogether, and they just do what other universities do, i.e. take weighted or unnweighted in the context of the high school

oh so they don’t go by the transcript anymore?

No they look at your transcript like usual, they just don’t add 0.5 for AP’s

Well I imagine it would be difficult to compare you to your school when your school doesn’t rank you (unless they tell you you’re in the top 5 at the end of the senior year)

Your ECs are amazing since there is nice variety and you even started a club at your school. Your GPA might be on the lower end of the scale but that will not hold you back when you apply. Worst case scenario is that you might get deferred if you apply early but you have great chance of getting in through normal application. I looked through the courses you have taken and your GPA is great for the work load and the rigor of your schedule.

Basically your scores are strong, your GPA is strong, and your ECs are fantastic. You have nothing to worry about IMO.

@FreeLancerMaine ok, thanks! so they drop the 7 points for AP classes this year, when looking at your transcript? or just calculate based on the numbers on the transcript? sorry, thats my last question

Sweet! This is only reaffirmed by the fact that my naviance account says I’m well into the ‘zone of acceptance’ for my school.

@hardestgameever I believe it means that they calculate based off the numbers off the transcript, so the GPA that your school submits is the GPA that they look at, and hopefully they have some indication as to the difficulty of your school, so they can gauge whether you did well or not. If they can’t, well then I think they’ll look at your classes to see if you challenged yourself.

Are you instate? That will help a lot. I think your GPA is a tad low, but not too bad. Your ACT scores are great, and your subject test scores are good too. Your EC’s are good and your essay looks interesting. Honestly the only thing that might hold you back from an EA admission is the GPA, but I don’t see you not getting in RA. In fact, I can see you getting in EA but I’m just not 100% confident.

Chance me back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1540068-chance-me-georgia-tech-will-chance-back.html

All I can say is that your GPA is a bit low, but anything is possible. Good luck kid. Hope you get what you want.
