OOS (Midwest) Asian-indian female. looking at BME. really hoping I could get in!

what are my chances?

Also, are they more likely to admit females? I know that being indian won't help.

You should get in as long as you make A’s this semester. You might want to look into some leadership as well, but your test scores help to balance your other areas. Good luck.

I would also encourage you to apply early action. If you look at the stats from this year, the early action admit rate was much higher than the regular admission rate. I do think being a girl will help a bit too. Next year, GT is supposedly going to accept the common application which likely means that the applicant pool will surge a bit, making the admit rate drop. Good luck.

I would send the SAT Chem subject test score of 680. The reason is that a subject test Chemistry 680 gives you credit for CHEM 1211K. Now you do have an AP Chem score of 4 which also gives you credit for CHEM 1211K. But the thing is that also having a subject test score confirms that knowledge of chem. In other words it can’t hurt to send it.

@MichiganGeorgia, you need to have both the AP credentials and the SAT Subject Test Score for Chem credit.

@georgiatech123, I’d say you have a pretty solid shot, 2330 is fantastic, and while your GPA is a tad on the lower side, (average for GT was a 4.0 this year in GT GPA), I’d say you being female helps considerably. Like jaharrison said, the acceptance rate should probably drop to the low 30’s by next year due to the Common App.

^ freelancer that is not the way I read it. Chem and English are the only subject test they will give credit for. They give lots of credits for a number AP scores. Look at the link below.
[GT Catalog : Tests Scores : SAT II Subject Tests](http://www.catalog.gatech.edu/students/ugrad/geninfo/sat.php)

^ Hopefully that’s the truth, because when I met with the Dean of the MSE and another student in the school of MSE, they both said you needed the SAT II score and the AP score for Chem. They weren’t entirely sure about it however, so I’d take this information with a grain of salt. I got a 750 on Chem, so hopefully it’s only the SAT II.

thanks for your help!
so, they do take gender into account when making their decisions?

Oh yes they do, you better believe it, SWEET HALLELUJAH BUTTER ON MY TOAST YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT.

What I meant to say was, due to the deficit of people of a certain female persuasion at this institution of higher learning, the admissions committee has tended, through no fault of their own in order to maintain equality and diversity within their school that is so reflective of the United States, to favor applicants of the aforementioned gender persuasion.

georgiatech123 - I want to add just one thing, dont skimp on the essays. I would even go out on a limb and say that essays are one of the most important differentiator. You need to show that YOU BELONG TO GATECH !!! My DS was in similar situation last yr. GPA of 3.6 (weighted), SAT 2220, he did do 6 APs though and scored a 5 mostly. He got rejected from all top 4 UCs (Cal, LA, SD, D) (which is purely GPA based – the holistic approach is all BS) but he did end up getting lots of OOS admissions, some of which I give credit to essays. Lots of his peers with better stats didnt get in these places, so it has to do with essays. He is “enjoying” his 1yr of georgia tech, right now in “dead” week ! Supposedly he should be studying, we will know by next friday!

thank you all so much!
here are my GT weighted GPA’s from each year.
F:3.33
S:3.58
J:3.92 (at least)

hopefully they’ll take into account the huge upward trend. I also heard that the average GT GPA this year was a 4.0? is this true!?

would you consider this school as a reach or a match? it’s really annoying me that my stats are either way below or above the middle 50%.

You will almost certainly get in. And GT does not give preference to female applicants relative to male applicants. It doesnt matter. This is definitely a match for you. And your CHEM SATII score OR your AP score is good enough to get out of freshman chem. you don need both, only one.

FeelancerMaine: If you got a 750 on SATII chem you can get credit for two chem courses (1211 and 1310).

I really doubt that you don’t get in. Your GPA isn’t THAT low, and your SAT scores are obviously in the top 75% at GT. Besides, you’re going to need them a better reason than a meh GPA to get admissions to turn down a girl. I know a couple of girls this year with similar GPA’s and much, much lower SATs who got in RA after being deferred.

thank you all for your input!

I just got an email from GT today (class of 2017). I got admitted from wait listed with GPA 3.6 and SAT 2000, two extras - nothing extra ordinary. I am planning to go for chemical engineering. I already put my deposit for penn state. Can anybody tell me why I should go GT over penn state. Thanks

Unless Penn State offers significant financial aid, GTech outranks it for all engineering disciplines, and is in a thriving city, and has international recognition as a top engineering school. Penn State is known more in the US.

Unless Ped State is significantly cheaper, you’d be dumb not to go to GT.
