@gnippaf sweet! Thanks so much :)

Alright guys, so I have a new objective: go from a 1580 on the PSAT to a 2000 on the SAT. Any tips?

What made you change plans? Going from 1580 to 1700-1800 is doable (1800 is ambitious but possible), but 1580 to 2000… have you had 2000’s several times in a row at practice? I’m afraid you’re setting yourself up for disappointment with such a lofty objective that would place you in the top 5% IN THE COUNTRY.
However you can go to the “tests” forum where there are lots of discussions and tips.

@MYOS1634 well, it’s certainly ambitious, but not impossible. I feel that getting a 2000 would make me a shoo-in for Quinnipiac ED
How would studying for one hour each day after my homework help?

A 2000 isn’t exactly for students shooting for Quinnipiac.
A 1250-1300 CR+M would be enough to make you a shoo-in. If you score higher, you should be able to add a couple more reachy colleges. :)

@MYOS1634 Haha, I’d hope so! While I don’t want to overexert myself during these next two months, I’d also HATE to take it again. I’d hope a score like you suggested, plus a 600 on the writing, would prevent my parents from making me retake it! :)

How would visiting the campus improve my chances?

Also, I got the info that I requested from Quinnipiac and Hofstra today :)

Great! Send them an email to thank them and say you’ll read their brochures carefully. Then ask about arranging for a visit in the Spring or in the Fall, when classes are in session (say you want to attend a class and eat in the cafeteria to get a feel for the place, not just on a tour. => this will give you an idea of the type of students who attend, if they’re dynamic and involved or passive and expecting to be spoon-fed.)

@MYOS1634 I sent Quinnipiac an email along the lines of your description, but Hofstra had a little slip at the end of their letter telling me to put my phone number down if I’m interested to visit, which of course I am. Should I still send Hofstra an email?

Bump

Just keep in mind that a lot of kids, probably the vast majority at this point, do take the SAT more than once, so your goal maybe should be limiting it to twice rather than just once, since the actual test conditions can throw people. I was able to get all my standardized testing in by the end of junior year, and I would definitely recommend that so you can focus on apps senior year. Good luck!

@rosie416 you’re right. I’ll shoot for an 1800+ the first time and then a 1900+ the second time. I think that’d be a good idea.

Sounds like a good plan! Use superscore to your best advantage

@rosie416 I definitely will! Thanks for the tip! What are my chances at Quinnipiac and Hofstra?

I think your chances are very good if you get to 1800, and pretty decent if you get to 1700. However your grades second semester junior year are going to matter a lot too, so make sure you get nothing but B’s and A’s. :)

@MYOS1634 what about final exams? Is it the same deal?

Final exam grades are computed into your final grade for the year in each subject, so the higher your grades, the better. Remember that you’ll essentially be judged on these since your first quarter grades may or may not be included in your counselor’s review.

@MYOS1634 Ah, I gotcha.
