chance me for gt- and recommend some other schools

Currently a junior.
SAT: 1550
ACT: 35
GPA Weighted: 4.2 (top 10% of moderately competitive school)
APs: Bio (4), Chem (3), World History (3), Calc AB, Lang, probably going to take Psych, Calc 2, Econ/Gov, Lit, Comp sci, and Physics senior year. It’s normal to take this many (or more) APs at my school though- so colleges might not think that I’m really “challenging myself”.

Awards: Some gold medal latin awards, National Merit Commended Scholar (estimated)

ECs: Certamen state, District Band 2x, competed for all-state band, volunteering at a daycare 40 hrs, total ~100 volunteer hrs, member of some clubs, planning on competing in a neurology tournament and HOSA state testing in addition to either hospital volunteering or a camp over the summer.

Circumstances/hooks: Asian female, family net income is ~40k/year, first gen, in state

Major: Neuroscience
Haven’t written any essays but based on how I think they might go and compared to others I’ve seen 6-7/10

The strongest point of my app is probably my test scores (which say nothing good about my work ethic, haha) and the weakest are my ECs. I’ve been thinking about how to improve them and came up blank. Also, what are some good match colleges? I’m thinking UGA is a possible safety. Any suggestions, criticisms, compliments, concerns, grievances? Bring 'em here- but don’t forget to chance me for gt!

Alternative = Auburn - Engineering is full of GT rejections, all high stat kids on merit scholarships. Great campus atmosphere too!

@threeofthree Thanks for the suggestion! Would Auburn be a match, reach, or safety?

Easily a safety - good merit… great atmosphere. UGA is much higher rated if you are not going into engineering (except civil or biomedical).

OP- you look like a strong candidate for GT, especially if you are in-state. Agree Auburn is good backup, as is Alabama.
@threeofthree How is Auburn for computer science?

@sullutac
Emory has a better neuroscience program. look into it.

@sunnyschool - my son was aerospace with a minor in computer science…not sure how in depth they get for a minor. His roommate freshman year was in the Wireless Engineering program (one of the few in the country) and it was really tough - they also have a strong program in cyber security engineering which is part of the computer science and engineering program I believe. If you are going into the sciences though, UGA or Emory would be better.

@emorynavy sure, will do

Neuroscience is a brand new major for GaTech. Because of their strengths in the sciences, and ties with Emory, I bet this will be a strong program. Psychology is good at GaTech, as is biology.

@Coloradomama
Maybe, maybe not. Gtech is not good at interdisciplinary majors and subjects. Emory is. Gtech has a poor track record when it comes to that and it’s obvious they are trying to change directions from their typical pedagogy.

@emorynavy thats exactly what @Coloradomama is trying to say. Rather than competing against emory for subjects that they are not as strong in, GT offers dual enrollment programs between the 2 schools. If im not mistaken, there is even a bus that runs between the 2 schools. Its very similar to the relationship that Harvard and MIT have, where Harvard students dual enroll with MIT for STEM related courses and activities.
