In one of your other numerous posts on this subject you asked for advice from someone who has attended one of these schools.
Here’s my advice;
You look like someone with privilege who hasn’t been able to do much with it. That’s not too impressive at any of these places, so I’m giving you very low chances at them.
@justonedad you don’t need to be so snarky. There is nothing in OPs stats to indicate he is someone with privilege. Priveleged or not it takes a lot of hard work to maintain a 4.0 gpa and get high test scores. I am really getting sick of people downplaying the achievements of kids who aren’t from low income families, while giving a free pass to kids with bad grades because they are poor. At some point people need to take responsibility for their own actions.
OP - your stats are impressive and you are academically qualified for all of those schools.
Really? What sort of personal experience are you basing that on?
^ your question doesn’t make sense. You said OP “looks like someone with privilege”. What are you basing that judgement on? Are we to assume anyone who plays golf and violin and has high stats must be privileged?
Yeah, I thought that was about the depth of your comment.
I agree wholeheartedly with Lkjh. JustOneDad, it’s fine to tell someone that not taking full advantage of their privileged position puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to admissions, but don’t blow that factor out of proportion and don’t make the assumption that he’s privileged based on VERY little evidence (none of which necessarily indicates privilege whatsoever).
You’d have to explain how I “blew it out of proportion”.
I also suspect you have very little experience with privilege so the notion that you are qualified to evaluate my experience with it is puzzling.
Blowing it out of proportion: providing “you look like someone with privilege who hasn’t been able to do much with it” as the only evidence/reason why you’re giving him “very low chances”
Now you’re showing that you don’t understand much about admissions at the colleges this poster asked about.
What an astute observation
Just chance the person and leave. Take your arguments elsewhere.
@justonedad you really should respond on the appropriate thread. If you read just the stats OP listed above, you could not possibly determine whether or not he is privileged. Reading some of his other posts I can see where you might get that impression. I do think you are being unfair in your judgement of OP (jealous much?). He can’t help it if his family is wealthy. Do you expect that he should have cured cancer or something? With all of the activities and community service OP listed on his other posts, I wonder when he has time to sleep. You obviously are unaware of the talent and years of dedication it takes to reach grade 8 ABRSM. Your remark about OP not doing much with “his privilege” is ridiculous. Are you even half as active or engaged in your community as OP is?
I believe @JustOneDad, with considerable life-experiences and education – which makes his opinion valuable, whether or not one agrees with his conclusions – was simply attempting to assess the OP’s qualifications in a manner similar to the admissions officers at these three ultra-competitive universities. That’s a real service to the OP. Endless debate can focus on whether this was done with adequate tact, however, I don’t doubt that his viewpoint has some merit.
This is the thread the OP posted on. Maybe you could explain why you think it’s not the appropriate thread and which one might be more appropriate.
"Are you even half as active or engaged in your community as OP is? "
LOL Just LOL
@JustOneDad What did he say to make him look privileged?
Here’s the simple response: you are a highly qualified applicant, and your chances are as good as anyone’s. In the context of the three universities you name, that means you have a chance, but they are long shots for everyone.
@justonedad if you made your remark about privilege on one of OPs chance me threads where he talked about traveling to 20 countries or doing impressive internships that probably required connections, your post would have made more sense. I don’t read every thread. By reading just this thread there is no way to judge that the OP is privileged. Privileged or not, the kid has accomplished a lot.
Okay people, move on! Leave him alone, just chance the OP and go! JustOneDad made a mistake, but there’s no need to spread a wildfire.
