Thanks!

Your scores are pretty good. Great accomplishments in the sciences, but that’s pretty typical for Asian applicants. You need something else to set you apart.

Is being a 1st generation immigrant really a hook? (I’m in the same situation, so that’s why I was wondering.)

I doubt that it is a hook. Wow, kudos to you. You are a very solid applicant.

Despite the fact that admissions for ivies and top colleges are unpredictable, I think you have a good chance. The passion in sciences is interesting but somewhat typical for an Asian applicant. However, you should definitely apply. After the admissions committee sees you have the right numbers, it’s mostly luck that leads to an acceptance.

To answer collegeinfo1994’s question, 1st generation can be a tip or perhaps a small hook when coupled with signs of adversity (low-income, attending a bad inner-city school, etc.). Even then, I don’t think it has quite the impact as a URM or recruited athlete. It can help though since top colleges like to add “diversity” to their campus.

Thanks, sharker! Interesting.

you have great chances. i am impressed with your science research credentials. just keep in mind that all of the schools you are applying to have an admit rate of less than 10%. statistically, even if you are a great applicant, there are no guarantees. i would find a few other schools that are more safety-ish to round out your list. you will almost definitely get into UVA early action, but they don’t tell you until january 31, so i might apply somewhere else just for a little peace of mind. i know that if i only applied to HYPSM and UVA i would be very nervous! good luck!
