Chance me for Harvey Mudd?

740 CW, 770 M, 770 W (710 MC, 12 essay)

Took June Math II SAT, score is pending. Will take Physics SAT in Fall.

GPA doesn't quite correlate with SAT score. Not sure what it is at the moment, but it was pretty much all C's freshmen year and all A's (except an A- in Advanced Computer Science) sophomore and junior year.

Only took 1 AP junior year (Stats). Rest were honors.

Senior schedule:
AP Lit
Ap Lang
AP World History
AP Physics C
AP Calc AB
Gym
Advanced Creative Writing II
AP Computer Science

Qualify for National Hispanic Recognition Program

Half hispanic,half white. Female.

Published in school lit mag, did marching band 3 years (trumpet). Will not do Marching band next year. Writer on School newspaper, member of school Physics team. Member of Cupcakes for Cancer (will hopefully have position next year). Member of Book Club (will probably have position next year). Jazz Band 3 years.

Cofounder and Co-President of Unicycle Club.

Will NOT be in top 10% of graduating class. My school does not rank though, but does provide a school profile which includes the distribution of grades.

Income: 100,000-200,000$

Go to good, affluent public school in northern New Jersey

bump

Reach. And how many C’s are we talking? It might put you at a serious disadvantage

Freshmen grades:

Band A-
Biology H C
English H B-
French II B-
Geometry H C+
Gym A-
World History H C+

I have an A+ in gym for Junior Year :)

Also, do you think applying ED would help my chances?

Sophomore and Junior grades are as follows if it helps:

10th (different school so different classes. This really was the only schedule though available. No real honor classes besides math available)
Algebra II H A
Chemistry A
English 10 A
Gym P
US History I A
US History II H A

11th
Creative Writing A+ (Half year course)
Advanced Creative Writing A+ (Half year course)
AP Statistics A
English 11 H A
Physics H A+
Pre-Calc H A
Gym A+
Health A
Financial Lit A
Advanced Computer Science A- (Half year course)

Taking French III over the summer so I’ll have two years of language. I am really bad at languages.

Applying ED will help your chances. It is hard to say what your chances are, don’t know how they will look at your freshman grades. It is good that you have had great grades for the last 2 years. Your SAT subject II scores may make a difference, too, if they are strong it will help. I think essays are very important at Mudd, too, so really put some time and thought into those, and make sure you proofread carefully and maybe have an adult review for feedback. And being female and Hispanic will be a boost. Don’t feel bad about being bad a French, my D is a freshman at Mudd and she is AWFUL at French. That in itself won’t hold you back.

I would be sure you explain in your additional information section for the Mudd app that you switched schools sophomore year and no honors classes besides math were available to you that year. Also, do you have an explanation for your grade issues in 9th grade other than just being young and not having your act together? Family issues or health issues? If so, you could ask your GC to discuss those in the recommendation they provide.

Finally, can you afford Mudd with no need based aid? Your income means you likely won’t get any. They do give some merit aid at Mudd, but if you are stretching to get admitted (and apply ED), you likely won’t get any if you do get in.

Reach, (it is for most students). SAT’s OK, but C’s in science and math courses in Freshman year won’t look good to a Science/Engr school. The rest of your grades look much better. You will need your essays and your EC’s to convey your strong interest in science. Apply ED only if Mudd is your absolute top choice. Is your interest in Mudd related to unicycles?

Thanks for the feedback! It is really appreciated. Yeah, Mudd is the place I really want to go to. I will look at other schools as well though.

@Miles Perrara Why I like Mudd:
super small/ wouldn’t feel lost
Surrounded by other people who really want to learn/ I can get study help
the Claremont Consortium in general
It’s in California
No fraternities or sororities or huge sport culture
Seems to have very supportive environment (lactaid room, transgender support, study help). Need to visit though
Great job prospects
AND They unicycle!

The core does sound intimidating though.

@Intparent My concern with applying ED is my GPA. With RD I could show more A’s on a hard schedule. But like you said ED is supposed to increase chances… What do you think with this in mind?

@Intparent, Yeah, I had some health issues Freshmen year that my Guidance Counselor knows about. I will definitely ask her though to include info regarding this in her rec letter

@Intparent we have the financials to pay the whole thing, it would have an impact though.

Mmm… I still think ED is the way to go to improve your chances. You should visit before that, though – will you have a chance to? From your description I think it would be a great fit for you. The core IS tough and you will work harder than you ever imagined (at least my kid has), but there is a lot of support.

Honestly, I think Mudd puts the most emphasis on EC’s. They really want them STEM related. I don’t see anything other than being a member of the physics society

Sounds good intparent. Thank you  Yeah, my mom and I are planning on visiting this summer.

@mumhammad9211 Yeah, that’s all I got. I was on the Physics I team (I for Honors, II for AP). Basically its a 4 person team that competes in local meets during the school year. I didn’t do particularly well at any of them. Most of the material we hadn’t covered yet in class.

Q, do you guys think I should submit a FAST app?

Agree that your ECs are light, but I actually think test scores are king at Mudd, with GPA also pretty important. They HAVE to know that you can do the work because it is a very heavy workload there. Can you do something science related this summer as an EC, and something at school in the fall? Better late than never…

@intparent Honestly I don’t think much is open this late in the year. Any suggestions?

I was thinking for a college essay somehow combining my love of physics and unicycling

Reach, as it is for most; the grades in science and math your freshman year will probably cause some discomfort for admissions, but your stability in those 2 over the next 2 years will probably ease that. SAT II’s definitely might impact; if you really want HM, and are committed to studying there for undergraduate, it may be a good idea to try and go for ED.

Reach - poor Freshman grades, not enough APs through Jr year and not far enough in Math for Mudd.

Yes, I hadn’t noticed the math. My kid went to a high school that only offered through AP Calc AB. She took that senior year, but also self studied for the AP Calc BC test senior year as well (and said so in her application).

Thanks guys, the feedback is much appreciated

Mudd gives a lot of emphasis on numbers (probably a bit too much). They care a lot about class rank, as well as SAT/ACT. If you look at their average stats, you can see that they’re even higher than Princeton’s.
