Schools I'm thinking about applying to:
Johns Hopkins
UPenn
Cornell
Georgetown
Columbia
Univeristy of Maryland
Duke
Stanford
Wash U
George Washington

I'm interested in biology/chemistry with a premed concentration.

Johns Hopkins - IN
UPenn - Reach
Cornell - In/Match/Low Reach
Georgetown-IN
Columbia-Reach
Univeristy of Maryland-In/Low Reach
Duke- Reach
Stanford- Reach
Wash U - Low Reach
George Washington - In/Low Reach

Overall, your good for a majority. But to be real blunt and honest - your GPA is going to KILL you. Remember your Asian American so there is a much higher standard for you guys (Unfortunately). Extremely competitive schools like Stanford, Duke and Columbia may consider both your SAT and GPA too low. Since you’re a rising senior get those scores up (SAT and GPA). Good luck man, I know with hard work you can get into some of those top schools/Ivies.

Johns Hopkins- Low reach
UPenn- Reach
Cornell- In/ low reach
Georgetown- reach
Columbia- reach
Univeristy of Maryland- In
Duke- reach
Stanford-reach
Wash U- In
George Washington-In

First I have to say WOW about your extracurriculars. They are outstanding so you are fine with that. Your SAT I and ACT scores seem pretty solid. But the only thing that deterred me for putting IN for most of the reach schools was your GPA, although not the only factor, a very important one. work hard at that and i do not see anything else that would deter you.

You really need to get that CR SAT score up!!! Your other two are AWESOME, that just needs to skyrocket and you will be all set. Just remember, most colleges superscore. Take it again with your head held high ready to dominate that CR section, and you will. Prepare as well…
Otherwise, that GPA needs to be above a 4.0 for Columbia and Stanford, but other than that you’re looking good.
Johns Hopkins - I could see you here - Low Reach
UPenn - Reach
Cornell - Reach (they don’t look at Writing Section of SAT, giving you a 1430 which is good but not outstanding)
Georgetown - Reach (^^ditto^^)
Columbia - High Reach (But it’s a reach for all, moreso for you because of GPA and CR SAT)
Univeristy of Maryland - In if you live in MD, if not low match
Duke - Reach
Stanford - High Reach (Same as Columbia, but harder)
Wash U - High Match
George Washington - In

^ Even if you’re ranked 20/130, it still hurts a lot to not be top 10%. JHU and WashU are surprisingly lenient during the ED round, and GWU and Maryland aren’t that selective to begin with, but you’re not going to be competitive at the other schools.

I agree with the earlier comments about class rank. Especially for the top tier schools you are thinking of applying to, it will hurt you. But if it is like you say and you may be higher, I wouldn’t count you out at the higher ones. Your ECs and Coursework are really good, but you may want to work on your SAT for schools like U. Penn, Cornell, Columbia, Stanford. At Hopkins and Duke you probably have a good chance. You are definitely in at George Washington.

I’d say apply to Hopkins and Cornell EA/ED if it is non binding. Actually, do Duke too (something like 30% acceptance rate vs. 16% in reg. decision)

I’ll admit I made a big mistake in overlooking the class rank; I didn’t even see it to be honest.

Here’s what I would do if I were you, Mr. Sudden:

1) Find out my class rank and what colleges would see.
2) Assuming it is around 30ish, apply ED to Hopkins.
Why? here is my reasoning:
~It is an EXCELLENT school, especially for premed. Probably the best you can get, better than a lot of Ivies.
~If you apply ED, your chances for Hopkins specifically increase substantially. In the RD round, in all honesty, there is a decent chance you will be rejected. However, in the ED round, it looks as if you have a 60-70% shot of getting in, which is good. Reason I’m saying to apply ED is because they are more forgiving, so they could look the other way for a lower than average class rank to take a kid they like.

For you, you need ESSAYS AND RECS THAT STAND OUT. You need to separate yourself from the crowd.

Johns Hopkins- Low reach/High Match
UPenn- Reach
Cornell- Reach
Georgetown- Reach
Columbia- Reach
Univeristy of Maryland- Match
Duke- Reach
Stanford-Reach
Wash U- Match
George Washington-Match

Good luck! If you can get your GPA up, than that would be great! Some clever ways of doing this are taking classes during the summer at your local community college(make sure they count as weighted).

At the top schools, on average 5% of accepted students were not in the top 10% of their high school class. When you factor in that 40% in the accepted class have a hook–they are recruited athletes, legacies and URM’s-- you understand that almost no unhooked students are admitted who are not top 10%. In fact, at the very top schools, most unhooked are val or sal.

GPA 3.91 out of 5.00 ? Is this your weighted GPA or does your school use a 5 point scale? As a straight conversion 3.91/5 is equivalent to 3.12/4.00; if that’s the case, the your profile is 3.12 GPA. 23rd%-tile class rank, strong test scores and fair to good ECs (are the tennis titles state-wide titles?).

My Guesses:

Johns Hopkins (ED maybe) reach otherwise
UPenn - Big Reach
Cornell - Reach
Georgetown - Big Reach
Columbia - Reach
Univeristy of Maryland - Safety
Duke - Reach
Stanford - Big Reach
Wash U - Reach (maybe with ED)
George Washington - Match

You need to clear up the GPA number for us; 3.12/4.00 and 23%tile aren’t going to attract too much attention from the elites.

Johns Hopkins- Reach
UPenn- Reach
Cornell- Match
Georgetown- Reach
Columbia- Reach
Univeristy of Maryland- Match
Duke- Reach
Stanford-Reach
Wash U- Match
George Washington-Match

About the GPA:
Its a 3.91 weighted, and a 3.5 unweighted.

Also, my friend at school’s mom is the Director of Admissions at Johns Hopkins. Would that increase my chance at all or does it make no difference?
