Chance me for Hotelie, pretty please?

Hi! :) As you can see, I'm pretty new here - mostly just a lurker who is trying to learn as much as she can about this whole college application process. I'm pretty set on going into Hotel school, my only concern is lack of experience in the industry and that my interest in this school is fairly recent. But I feel like the finance concentration is really perfect for me. Any advice/tips/chances would be greatly appreciated! I'll be a senior next year, obviously. I hope this is in the right place...

UW GPA: 3.81 (C in Physics killed me sophomore year...)
W GPA: 4.53
SAT: 2300 (800W/730M/770CR) (took one time only)
ACT: 33
SAT IIs: 720 Bio (ewewew), 800 Chinese, 760 Math II (also not too happy with this)
APs: US History(4), Biology(5), English Lang(5), Calc AB(5), Govt(4), French Lang(4)
Senior year courseload: AP Psych, AP Lit, AP Econ, AP Stat, Humanities Seminar (I'm in a special program), Student Aide (nothing left), French 6 ... second semester, I'm taking Accounting @ a community college through my school's college program.

Awards:
-National Merit Scholar (most likely, got 240 on PSAT)
-Maryland Distinguished Scholar (most likely, automatic with National Merit)
-AP Scholar with Distinction (Pending)
-Humanities Scholar with ?? Distinction (Pending whatever I get on my Senior Independent Project)

EC's:
-Red Cross Club (Soph, Jr, Sr)
-French Honors Society (Fr-Sr, Executive Committee & VP)
-Patriot Ambassadors (Fr-Sr, Leadership & Event Committees, Head Usher)
-Piano (played since 2001, certified nationally)
-Mural Club (Fr, Soph)
-Leading Edge Student Assembly (raise awareness for disabled kids, since 2008)

Work Experience:
-Did taxes for a few months during break at an accounting firm
-Currently interning at a hotel internet marketing firm that also markets for the Statler - am getting a rec from my advisor there
-Taught English @ summer camps in Shanghai China for 2 summers (levels preschool-high school)
-Helped parents operate Chinese restaurant from birth-10 yrs old (don't know if this counts, but I already wrote my essay on this and my friend's mom who is connected to the Hotel school says its strong for a draft)

Others:
-Fluent in Mandarin Chinese (don't know if this counts for anything)
-Humanities & Arts program at school
-100+ volunteer hours, but at library and in association with Patriot Ambassadors (boo)
-Will get strong recs from my two teachers (French and Art)

Biographical:
-Female
-Chinese (As if I didn't make it obvious enough, haha)
-Public school that's top 100 in the nation (if not top 50)
-State: MD

My concerns are...do I seem unique enough?? Do I have too few ECs? Does my UW GPA suck (be honest :D) Is it okay if I only get recs from my French and Art teachers or should I try to get a math one? Does Cornell even place importance with rec letters from employers? How do I schedule my interview? And lastly, what are my chances? :D

Sorry this is so long, but whoever does it - thank you so much! You really rock.

Ur from MD? Where in MD are you from?

Also do you have more or any other work experiences?

Your start with work experience is good, but if you can try to get more before you apply. Also, you stats are very good, you shouldn’t be worried about those.

What you need to do is convince the Admissions Committee with your Hotel School essay. As long as you show them you fit, you’ll get in.

Plus you’re considered a URM (even though I personally don’t consider Asians minorities, lol, no offense), which should really put you in at the Hotel School. THS is committed o having like 20-25% of its students be diverse, so you should be fine.

Just make sure your essay is extremely convincing.

Unforunately no more job experience for now =/

I tried to find a job for the fall, but with the economy these days… I’m trying to maybe find a job at a local arts studio for a fall internship. I’m definitely planning on going back to TIG and the financial office for spring/next summer but if I apply ED it will be too late at that point.

I’m from Montgomery County :)

i know you :]

you already know what i say about your chances, but for your questions

-i’d say your hotel internship and accounting firm stuff helps you stand out.
-your EC’s are fine, especially since you have leadership positions in some of them.
-your UW GPA is fine, i’d say its around the average of acceptances, but i’m not sure
-your recs can definitely be from your french and art teachers, i dont see why it has to be math?
-if the rec letter from your employer really shows that they actually know you well, and aren’t just writing it for a favor, then it should be useful. i had a rec from my employer at my internship too, but i’m not sure how much it helped
-don’t know about how to schedule your interview, but i’m sure a certain someone you know knows how

oh and @ akaCondi, asians aren’t URMs…just minorities

^ Hi  Haha as you can see I finally gave in to the temptations of asking people to chance me here.

yeah, at least your chance thread is more descriptive and informed than 90% of those posted here haha

Whoever up there said Asians are URM’s is crazy.

Sorry but Asians are more ORM’s than another other race; Caucasian males included.

that c in physics killed you.
sucks for you

bump :)

&& is that supposed to be sarcastic, collegeboss?

Nah, that C won’t do much to you, physics is mostly irrelevant to Hotel Administration (I had multiple B’s in History and English, and I still got into engineering, so this shows that they do take into account your major)…otherwise your GPA is competitive, but not outstanding. SAT scores are most excellent, no worries there. Excellent ECs. Are you EDing? For your demographic you are above average to good. I give you a 70% chance ED and a 40% chance RD.

**ananya77041 **: Thanks  Yes, I’m 99% sure I’m EDing unless I have a humongous change of heart.

I think you have a decent shot. Im from Baltimore Maryland :D!!!

Whooooo! Yay for all these MD’ers going to Cornell! Hope to join you guys next year :D
