I'm am Currently a High school junior and i want to attend UMBC i live in baltimore,MD. I played Varsity football,Debate, indoor, outdoor track runner, vouleenteer at mercy and university of maryland , Book club, litho club . My unweighted GPA:2.94 :( Weighted:3.00. i know my gpa on the down but will it screw me over? my sat i will take next saturday and will try to get 1500 or 1600. and i will get multiple letter of recommendation from teachesr. and i will apply early too when i do well in SAT. I want to major in Biochemistry any chance for Howard

Note* If you’re going to post a chance thread, do it in the “What are my chances?” forum. Also, a word to the wise: proofread. You want to go to UMBC. Okay, that’s fine, but just remember to change the name of the school when you’re posting a chance thread. And don’t do that in your essays. I’m pretty sure that’s an almost-guaranteed rejection :-p
Anyway, I think that you look like a “serial-joiner” when it comes to extracurriculars. Talk to your guidance counselor about which ones are most important to you and which ones you should list on your application. If they are an hour a week type clubs, then don’t list them. Depth, not breadth, when it comes to activities.
As for your GPA, it is pretty low. Have you taken a lot of advanced courses? Is there a good reason behind it? (I.e. illness, either with you or in the family; death in the immediate family, etc.) If so, your guidance counselor can explain that in their recommendations. Or, do you have an upward trend in your gpa?(meaning low your freshman year, but it rose through junior year)
Also, do you have any leadership positions? Those always look favorable on an application.
To be honest, it’s pretty difficult to chance you at this stage because there are quite a few blanks. If you give us more detail, then we could more accurately asses your chance of admission. But remember(and I don’t mean to sound like a hypocrite, because I have posted chance threads as well) : we are just strangers on College Confidential. We are not admissions officers. The only people that can tell you your chance of getting in is the admissions officers. So while you may look to us for suggestions as to what you can do to help your application in the admissions process, none of our guesses are guaranteed.

Good Luck.

thanks a lot

Yes your GPA is very low. You should really focus on getting your SAT scores to 1600 or try taking the ACT.

yeah i would definitely say reach for the 1600s+ with your sat…howard is definitely getting more competitive so i would say your gpa and sat have to have some type of agreement to them…like a 3.1 1570+, 3.3 1540+, 3.5 1520+, and so on

on another note however, keep up with the ec’s…i know a lot of schools tell you that ec’s are important, but to Howard they really are…they want people at the school who’ll actually contribute to the school and ultimately contribute to the legacy, not kid who’ll go there and’ll have a 4.0 gpa but won’t even know what the outside of his or her dorm looks like

lastly, the good thing is that you are a high school junior…you still have like 2 or 3 more sats/acts you can take…the first time i hated my score (took it may of junior year), so I studied really hard over the summer, and by the time i took my last sat i raised my score 310 points lol
