Chance me for HYPSM

Please chance me for HYPSM. I'm really hoping to be able to get into MIT, since I didn't meet their financial requirements for QuestBridge.

SAT: 2200, Math 800, Reading 670, Writing 730

ACT: Composite 33, Math 35, English 33, Reading 30, Science 34, Writing 10 on the essay

SAT II: Math II 800, Chem 690, Japanese 670(November, so not sent in)

AP/IB: Euro 3, US Gov't 3, US Hist 4, Lang 5, Calc AB 5, Comp Sci 5, Stats 5, IB Anthro 5(out of 7)

GPA: UW 4.00 W 5.52

Class rank : 1/550

Senior year schedule: IB Theory of Knowledge, IB English IV HL, IB Contemporary History HL, AP Chem(for IB HL), AP Calc BC(for IB HL), AP Japanese(for IB SL), AP Psych

Essays: I'm not good at judging my own essays, but my counselors said they were good, and so did my friends I showed them to. I wrote about Mu Alpha Theta for my club, and about the Order of the Arrow for a significant experience in the essays portion on Common App. I applied to MIT through QuestBridge, so they only have the Order essay and one on my love of math. For Princeton, I responded to the Wilson quote and talked about Scouting's influence on me with regards to community service. For Yale, I reused the love of math essay. For Stanford, I wrote something about MAO for intellectual development and meeting goals and helping others for what matters to me. For Harvard, I plan to use my Stanford letter to a roommate and maybe the love of math essay, if it fits.

Letters of Rec: I didn't read any of them, but I had my chem teacher of three years write one and my Japanese teacher of four years write the other. Both of them are good writers and I have faith they were good letters. My counselor knows me pretty well, and I think she did a good job on it, too.

EC:
Order of the Arrow(Scouting's National Honor Society) : Vigil Honor(Highest award), Lodge Service Chairman(9, 10, 11, 12), obtaining the National Service Award for our lodge the past two years
Mu Alpha Theta(Math Honor Society) : Treasurer(11), Instructor of Geometry/Pre-Calc(10, 11, 12), I've ranked at regional, state, and national competitions
Civil Air Patrol : Cadet Squadron Commander(9, 10), staff at state events. I obtained the Amelia Earhart Award, designating me as Cadet Captain
Japan Club/National Japan Bowl : I was the Vice-Captain for the national Japan Bowl, where we came in 12th(11) and 11th(12)
National Honor Society : Brain Brawl Captain(12)
Scouting : Eagle Scout, won and ranked in various regional sea scouting competitions
Bowling

Awards: Harvard Book Prize for my school, AP Scholar with Distinction, National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar

Race: Hispanic

Income: < 45,000, single parent income

State: Florida

Intended major: Chemistry/Math

I’d say that you have above average chances. I’d give a rough estimate of 15-20% chance for each, or about a 70% chance of getting accepted to at least one. This is a wild guess obviously.

For a chem major you kind of have a low score on the subject test. Maybe you can take it again?Your high GPA will definitely attract HYPSM. Being a boy scout is a plus. You have a chance. I wouldn’t bet any money on it. Good luck! If you have time, could you chance me as well?

Also being a Hispanic male interested in a STEM major will help compensate for the not spectacular SAT II.

Thanks, johnb45, definitely makes me feel more confident going in to the rest of the year.
Lax4lyfe, I just chanced you back. Sorry I didn’t do it earlier, didn’t get a chance until now. Thanks for the comments.

Bump. Anyone else?

Your definitely in the SAT ranges, but MIT is all about looking into character and passion specifically, your chem score shouldn’t hurt too much due to your 800 Math II, your states are impeccable in GPA, Rank, and Sat is fine. Your an URM so this will definitely help, and overall all else considered as long as you had strong essays portraying your passions you have a very good shot.

Due to your test scores, I’d definitely recommend applying for Math instead of Chem. Its nearly impossible to predict HYPSM results, but I think you have a better shot at MIT than the other colleges. Although (minority + non-STEM major) is better at HYPS than MIT, (minority + STEM major) is better at MIT than HYPS. Right now though, all five of them are still reaches (of course, the same is true for 99.999% of applicants).

For MIT, everyone is super smart and you need a hook or two to get in, so I’m being a little harsh (sorry!)

My breakdown:

+SAT I = lower end, but still somewhat acceptable.
-SAT II = very low Chem and Japanese scores (IMO, retake)
+GPA = high, on target
+Rank = very good
+Courseload = very good

EC’s:
+General leadership is pretty good.
-Awards are a little weak; they all seem local minus a few of them.
-Not focused- looks a little random to me
-nothing chemistry related

However, what do you mean by “ranked at regional, state, and national competitions?”

If you mean awards at the JMO level, then I think you have a decent (>30%) shot. That would fulfill your lack of distinguished recognition.

^The kid’s a URM though, so I think it will balance out. Personally, I think OP will get in.
