Hi, I’m a high school senior and am going to be applying to IU - Bloomington.
Major - Chemistry
SAT - 2140
SAT(superscored) - 2230
SAT II Chemistry - 740/800
SAT II Math - 720/800
GPA(unweighted) - 3.4
Pursuing an IB diploma
Have done 4 internships in hospitals, pharmaceutical companies etc. with recommendation letters from all of them.
Have done over 100 hours of volunteering as well.
National level spell bee as well.
I’d guess that you would probably get in. Your GPA is below average, but the SAT is very impressive. I would apply to a couple safer schools than IU though just in case
The earlier you apply the better. The window is larger now, and only gets smaller as time goes on. You will get in. If you wait, you might get a deferral for a little bit. Your SAT is very strong. GPA is so so. Not a big enough problem to keep you out. If you use the IU app, and not the common app, it is easy to fill out. The essay is quite easy as well. I encourage you to get it out by the end of the month…
@Cavk I would probably get moving on your application. The cut off for scholarship consideration is Nov. 1 so you don’t want to miss that deadline. Also, IU is starting to make their decisions and I think I read that they will be mailing out acceptance letters in the next two weeks to the first round.
Also, don’t forget, most acceptances are conditional depending on your final transcript so make sure to keep working on your grades.
I’m currently wrapping up my essay and sending my test scores and I think I can get the application out within the next 2-3 days. Would there we any significant decrease in my probability to get in considering that acceptances have already been mailed?
Also on average, how long does it take for the acceptance letters to come around?
I know I’m being annoying but I really want to get into IU.
@Cavk I think as long as you get your stuff in by end of the month you would be fine. I always just felt like the longer someone waited the fewer slots there are to be filled and as the slots get filled then the later applicants come under much more scrutiny to fill the final spots. I don’t have any evidence of that but it just seems that way.
I don’t know what the average response time is after submission. My D applied the first week of August and the school had her transcripts on August 29th which was the final piece. She met with a school rep in September and they told her they wouldn’t start processing until mid October but I know that is not correct since IU has already posted on Instagram that the first round of acceptance envelopes are due to hit the mail in two weeks.
I think the response time once your application is in really depends on many factors so what might be true for one person might not be true for another.
Are you in state or out of state? Have you visited the school yet and met with the admissions? Just curious what is the attraction to IU.
I know some schools are sending out letters already as my D just received an acceptance to Kentucky but we still have 4 more schools with IU being one of them we are waiting to hear from. She did that app the same day as the IU app. Do you have other schools that you are applying to? If so, you might want to get those in soon as most of the schools my D applied to all stressed not missing the Nov. 1 date for scholarship consideration.
I’m applying to other schools around the same time as this one since my school has a policy of sending the mid-term transcripts with the initial application and now that I’ve just received my transcripts, I’m ready to start applying.
I’m an international student but I visited the campus once and loved the atmosphere.
