Chance me for Ivies, please (:

I'm currently a Sophomore in High School.

GPA: 3.85 (uw) 4.85 (weighted)
These should be much higher by the end of this year, when they will be recalculated.

Rank: 1/800+
AP's Taken so far: AP World, AP Spanish Lang, AP Euro, AP Human Geo, AP Psych.

I've taken 5 classes at a community college, which counts as college credit. I plan on taking more of these.

EC's: Volunteer Service at Nursing Home, will travel to Caribbean for Humanitary help, Amnesty International, Social Studies Honor Society, Spanish Club, FBLA, Interact Club, First Priority, Silver Knight Club, SAAD Club.

Next year will also join Model UN, National English Honor Society , Science Honor Society and Math Club

Classes for next year (Junior Year):
AP Computer Science A, AP Art History, AP Spanish Literature, AP Environmental Science, AP English Language, AP American History, Pre-Calc Honors, and classes at community college.

Oh, I took the Spanish SAT II and got 800. Will soon be taking Math and Bio.

Also, during 9th grade and 10th (this year), I've taken everything Honors or AP.

The classes I take at my community college are after school throghout the year, so my schedule is full most of the time. I just hope colleges can see that because it is really a lot of work o:

This may help me... or not, but I'd like to throw it out there. I'm the first person in my family to go college, and my mom and I moved here from Cuba just 4 years ago. I came here without knowing things such as the language , and I'm truly proud of myself and the things I've accomplished (: I just want to say to anyone that, anything that you want to do in life, you can do it (:

Please lemme know what I should work on and I really appreciate your comments!! (: Thanks for your time!

Academics are obviously good, but
your ECs aren’t really all that special. Nothing stands out enough.

Thank you! I know  Any recommendations? O:

Are you a US citizen?

If you’re the first to go to college and are from Cuba, you have a big advantage over a lot of other applicants. You show obvious commitment in your classes (which are quite impressive), but you need to beef up your EC’s to a point where they are recognizable on a state or national scale.

Yes; I am a U.S citizen (: I actually get that a lot, lol. I’m legal, I’m legal (: Thanks guys!

As for the EC’s, I don’t know what to do  My school doesn’t offer sports, and I’ve joined almost every club. I’m thinking about started like my own community project, but I have no idea how to start that.

I asked that question because of the financial aid situation for international students, not whatever you’re thinking of.

What’s your SAT score?

That’s the thing. Dont just join a million clubs. In fact, you shouldn’t list most of the ones you are in.

A college application is about telling a story about yourself. It’s about showing your passions, dreams, and goals. Your ECs should reflect that.

Here, I’ll give you an example. I am interested in public health. So, I volunteer at a convalescen hospital (where I started a community outreach project), intern at a soy and vegetarianism company, am on the science bowl team, in the environmental club, tutor math, am founder/president of the red cross club, and over summers I did CTY (after 9th), an immunology internship abroad (after 10th), and next summer I will be doing an immunology internship through Stanford’s SIMR program. Do you see how that tells a story? I got involved in what I love. I also have a couple other random ECs, like treasurer of Leo club, piano, and teaching private piano lessons, but the main point is that I do what I love.

Just seek out things in your area of interest, inside or outside of school. Start something cool, be a leader, show your passion, even just get a part time job to show responsibility, etc. do something with your summers. In an ivy league’s mind, a summer isn’t a break, it’s a time to further explore an EC.

Hope I helped :)

No, no, I didn’t mean it like that. I said that not because you asked me, but because it’s true o: I do get that a lot. But I do get why you were asking (: SAT’s I will be taking them next year, since I’m a Sophomore now. I have to prepare good, right? hahaha Thanks (:

That was really helpful! I see what you mean. I’m planning on listing just the Honor Societies and the ones I will have a leadership position on, which I will apply this year. Again, that was extremely helpful!! (:

Bumpity bump

Without scores, it’s impossible to say. Your 800 Spanish score, as a Cuban, will not impress the committee.

I’m aware. I’m not even sending it to Ivies. That’s why I’m taking Math I and Bio soon (:

You should take math 2, not math 1.

Also, I wanted to let you know that my ECs probably aren’t Ivy quality. I don’t have national awards, etc. However, coupled with your 1st gen hook, I think something similar would do the job for you.

Your ECs are really good! I, personally, think they are Ivy quality.

Bump bump bump

Buuuump, I just got an Internship at a Law Firm for the Summer!

Anyone? Anyone?

how did you take so many APs by sophomore? Is it AP tests self study? Also how did you get the internship? And yes, your ECs are all over the place. I liked the post that suggested showing your passion. Right now, looks like a big laundry list.

Oh, and ivies like leadership ECs - class presidents, club presidents…etc…
