ESSAYS: written very last minute. I'm a decent writer though so they were well written but not perfect. One of my concerns is that my personal statement didn't pour out my soul. It definitely shows my personality and I guess is kind of light/hopefully humorous, but they do not delve into my soul. It is a bit unconventional of a topic, and I've had 85% of people like it and 15% not so much (they thought it came off cocky/arrogant? is there anything wrong with a little arrogance?). Can an essay HURT an applicant??

LETTERS OF REC:
Teachers: Both should be great. One is like a mentor to me and the other is like my second mom.
Counselor: good probably but not anything spectacular

COLLEGES:
Columbia
U Penn
Yale
Harvard
Stanford
Georgetown
Brown
Dartmouth
Duke
USC
UCLA
UC Berkeley
UCSB
UCSD

I only posted what went onto my application. I did my application very hastily and last minute. I have more activities, extracurriculars, etc that I completely forgot to put on the application(I want to hit myself!). I will not be assessed on them for admission, so I didn't want to be chanced with them either.
Should I mail in resumes? I don't want to be annoying because there are only a couple things (though notable) that I forgot.

Also, four of my applications went in late. I live on the west coast and they went in from 0-10 minutes past 9pm. Is this an auto reject?

Sorry for asking so many questions! Send me your chance threads! I’d be happy to oblige.

your essays might hurt you, but you said you’re a good writer so hopefully they won’t come off as sloppily done. and i’m not sure about late applications, but aside from that…

definitely in at UCSB and UCSD. LA, Cal, and USC almost positive you’ll get in. i don’t know much about columbia or georgetown, but more than likely you’re a serious contender for those schools-along with the rest of the schools on your list. some of them are crapshoots (i.e. HYPS) but again, you’re still a competitive candidate. good luck!

Great stats!! Amazing GPA and test scores. But I must admit that your ECs are not very focused. That been said, you still have a great chance at all those schools. You should get into at least one or two of Penn, Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Brown, and Dartmouth. But they are top schools and it is a crapshoot even students with your app. Your essays might hurt you since you wrote it overnight though. I’d say you are a match at Georgetown, Duke, UCLA, and Berkeley. Guaranteed in at USC, UCSB, and UCSD.

erm my impression of you is that you aren’t focused on anything, which may be a boon or bane depending on your AO ><
i personally think your ECs/awards are too scattered, meaning i won’t have a very strong impression of you. you should have centered your apps along a certain theme i think…

In at the UCs and USC. Likely in at Georgetown. The Ivies/Duke you should get into at least a couple.

@1234d
My activities and whatnot are mainly focused on international studies/debate/languages/community service, which I guess isn’t one clear discpline but they all can be used in what I want to pursue in the future.
The aquarium thing is random but it’s volunteer work and tons of people skills.

Also, post your chance threads if you want a chance back!

I’m going to say:

In at UCs, very competitive (high match to low reach) for Duke, Brown, Columbia, etc.
and crapshoot (as always) for HYP. Sorry you haven’t cured cancer, but who knows? Great stats, great GPA; your ECs ARE a little scattered, and I hope your essay doesnt hurt you too much; but count on getting in many of your top choices.

Great scores, however, the EC’s may not be strong enough for some of the ivies

i agree, week EC’s fo rivies and duke, UC’s in and probly in at GTown

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/623727-chances-would-appreciated-chances-back.html</a></p>

Wow, your application sounds almost exactly the same as mine, including the schools you applied to. Even the part about writing the essay overnight and submitting some schools late  My best guess is that you get in virtually all the UC’s, one of HYPS, three of Col,Penn,Duke,Dart,Brown,GTown. Pure conjecture, but good luck!

Wow. Great stats you have there. I agree with some of these guys that your extracurrics arent particularly focused but in essence that might be a positive thing. I mean if your stuff is fairly random that might impress colleges and they’ll want to meet such a diverse individual. Therefore that can only help you in my opinion. In fact a friend of mine is riding on that specific random trait. I think you are fine. Might have a bit of trouble with the higher echelon places because of your so-called badly written essays but I believe you’ll be fine. GOOD LUCK!

Chance me back please!: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/630384-hello-everyone-please-chance-me-i-am-very-worried.html</a></p>

Thanks everyone.
Some people did not post their own chance threads (if they have any), so I didn’t chance back. Just come back and post your thread if you want a chance too!

Any other opinions?

Oh, I’m also going to apply to Washington University in St. Louis…
chances on that too?

I really think you have a great chance of getting into a few of your Ivys! Honestly, your scores are great and you seem well rounded. Even though you may have only a few ECs, you still are a leader in them (I forgot that saying about trades, but you get what I’m saying!) You probably will get into everywhere else (though I’m not sure about GTown, they mystify me.)

Good luck!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/629734-chances-harvard-yale-cornell-brown-columbia.html</a></p>

Columbia - Low Reach
U Penn - Low Reach
Yale - Reach
Harvard - Reach
Stanford - Reach (as it is for everyone haha)
Georgetown - High Match
Brown - Low Reach
Dartmouth - Reach
Duke - Low Reach
USC - Low Reach
UCLA - Match/High Match
UC Berkeley - Low Reach
UCSB - Safety
UCSD - Safety

Wow, great stats, for sure. Hopefully your essays focused on what your true passion(s) is/are, because you seem to suffer from the well-rounded syndrome that colleges are straying away from accepting. Also, I know that colleges deny racial consideration, but your being Asian may place you in a large pool of applicants. Other than that, I think you definitely have a shot at all of those schools, but it’s always a crapshoot for the high ones. Chance me back please :)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/630727-chance-please-ivies-uc-s-some-others.html</a></p>

Thanks, anyone else?

honestly, with that gpa and test scores, you should have a very good chance for the non ivys. and with those leadership positions, you should get into at least a couple ivys, including dartmouth and brown. for you to get into the top ivys and stanford, you essays should shine, and depending on how well you really did on them should determine if you’re in or not. but yea overall, pretty good chance, mostly low reaches.

This is not true. Colleges may give these years more consideration than your first but they will still look at your first year.

That said, what is your GPA for 9-12?

Standardized scores are competitive, no need to worry further.

Well, it can’t really hurt an applicant in the sense that it can cause a committee to reject an applicant already accepted based on other merits.

But, it can fail to help an applicant which is a bit of a concern here. You need a solid essay to be accepted. Simply having the numbers and ECs aren’t enough if your essay doesn’t give a narrative to the rest of your application.

How much has your tutoring company made?

Colleges discourage you from sending in additional information. It’s up to you to decide if that extra info would help you more than hurt you.

No, you’re fine.

Karot: Thanks for answering my questions!
My academic 9-12 GPA is 4.8113 W and 3.9446 UW (less weighted courses taken during freshman year). I have straight As from freshman and junior year. I got Bs in 2 semesters of math honors and 1 semester of chemistry honors (3 Bs) during my sophomore year.
My overall GPA 9-12 grade (counting PE and whatnot) is 4.8152 W and 3.9485 UW.

My tutoring company isn’t as much of a legitimate business as other types of businesses, and I don’t think I’m sending in a resume so it doesn’t matter.

The Essay thing is worrying me now…

Thanks for your input ATLFalcon and karot.

Ok so I’m going to just go in order of how you laid out your info. lol

Korean. Hmmmm asians are a majority so may hurt you (or just not help you) lol

Great GPA/classes. Esp. two foreign languages!!

Not all schools superscore SAT. Your ACTs are fantastic!

ECs are good. Don’t see anything pop out though.

Okay. Now to t he evaluation. i will judge based on what my brother taught me (he works in admiss. at brown)

Columbia - reach
U Penn - big reach
Yale - reach
Harvard - big reach
Stanford - reach
Georgetown - low reach/high match
Brown - high reach ( your application doesn’t see “you”. Maybe it shows in your essays?)
Dartmouth - high reach
Duke - low reach/high match
USC - in
UCLA - in
UC Berkeley - in
UCSB - in
UCSD - in
