Chance Me for Ivies

Hello! I am going to be a senior in September and am currently freaking out over colleges now. I have a broad array of interests that appear in all the Ivies. Right now, I want to consider which ones I have a chance of entering. Thank you so much for your help! (:

Hi, I really wanted to post here because our profiles are very similar, so I’m in a similar spot as you. In terms of your profile, you’re definitely the caliber of student who can apply and have a shot at ivies.

In terms of which ones you have a shot at entering, the answer is pretty intuitive and what you would expect. Cornell and UPenn are the easiest to get into, Dartmouth, Brown, and Columbia slightly above that, and Harvard, Princeton, and Yale slightly above that. (The borders are a little fuzzy, excuse me if I put a school in the wrong tier, we are talking IVY league here!) But those general rankings just talk about the schools, and where you apply should be based on YOU. I know you said you have a broad array of interests, but try and get specific. What do you plan to major in? (Does the school have a good program for this?) What activities do you plan to do in college? (Is the school newspaper independent? How big is the business club? What is Greek life like?) What city is it in? (Is Ithaca too small? Is New York City too big?) And most importantly, where can you see yourself going to school for four years and fitting in? Unfortunately, these are questions only you can answer. To find all this out, you’re going to need to do a lot of research on your own. It will be worthwhile, believe me. You might even find a school that completely stands out and steals your heart (BC for me!!) So don’t be afraid to spend hours researching and looking up seemingly silly things; they won’t be silly when you’re actually attending college!

If you were wondering about me personally (after all, we have similar profiles) I will be applying to UPenn, Cornell, and Princeton. I could go more in depth about why, but this is your thread about you, not me :stuck_out_tongue: hopefully I helped and if you would like to ask any more questions please do so! Just keep in mind that I am a clueless rising senior just like you, so please use what I have to say as fuel for your own thoughts, don’t live by my word. Good luck!

You should just apply to all the ivies if you like them all:) but apply to safeties as well.
imo I think you are quite the average applicant in these schools. (You seem just like me, honest). Please don’t take offence, but your ec’s are pretty weak and ec’s is a big deal in apps. However you have good grades like most applicants and so you won’t be instantly cast aside. Just write super spectacular essays

Your chances (just my two cents):
Better ivies (hyp): high reach
Lower ivies (columbia, penn, dartmouth, brown): reach

But I heard they’re a crap shoot so maybe you will get into one of them:) good luck!

Oh I forgot cornell - reach.

By the way don’t take my words to heart. I’m also an aspiring applicant (junior currently) so I wouldn’t know very well. However I have been on CC for quite long and know that applicants to ivies are crazy brilliant!! But maybe those are just the ones who post their stats up to brag a little. There are probably a number of applicants just like you who got in.:)

@whs2014: First of all, thank you so much for replying!

Second, I really do appreciate your advice. Also, I do not mind you taking my spotlight at all! I really do think that your thought processes and reasoning might help elucidate some gray areas for me and other people as well.

I was wondering why did you choose those Ivies? Did you get to visit those colleges?

@econsftw: Thank you for replying :)

I take no offense at all! I know my ECs are weak. I took more clubs freshman year and even did some sports. However, I did not continue due to my schedule. I was not sure if it was worth even including… (What do you think?)

Also, for any general response:

Do you think it is worth taking the SAT I or IIs again? I am not a great test taker, but I do not want that fact to inhibit my college application process :</p>

If u did them for less than a year, I think they’re not worth mentioning. They might think you’re trying too hard to make your application look fuller when it’s substanceless. But I dont really know how admission officers think, so you should ask around :)

Chance me guys? :)

I think you have a good shot at Cornell and UPenn, depending on whether you are applying CAS or Wharton. HYP is always a gamble.

What is your intended major?
Think more about matches and safeties. You do need them. Your chance at Ivies would be around their overall acceptance rate.

NJ Governor’s School of Engineering and Technology
Rank:3/350, UWGPA 3.9

but SAT and SAT 2 and AP scores do not match

Back @xia0amei: No problem! Keep in mind that my reasons may seem a little shallow because I didn’t really fall in love with any of the schools, but an ivy is an ivy and things change when you actually have the acceptance letter in your hand. Cornell I’m definitely applying for Dyson. Their business program is awesome and I want to be an accounting major, so it just connects. I suppose I’m applying to Wharton for the same reason, but honestly Wharton’s grad school is FAR better than undergrad and I would rather go to Dyson. Still, Wharton is a great school. I’m applying to Princeton because I believe it’s the best ivy (yes, better than Harvard! :0) and I’m also a Presbyterian (my mother is clergy, in fact) so going there would be a huge honor in many ways. Princeton’s concentrations are a little limited for the business side of things (I would have to concentrate in economics in general) but let’s be honest, it would totally be worth going there! I really feel like those ivies have the most to offer me specifically, so that’s why I’m applying. As billcsho asked, what is your intended major? That’s very, very important.

@econsftw: Thanks!

@ Timberwolf: Thank you for your input!!

@billcsho: currently on the premed path. though finance is a strong contender as well. thank you for replying by the way, and i will keep that advice in mind.

@20more: do you think that this would ruin my chances greatly? i’m not a great test taker… and to this day, i am still greatly annoyed because i always scored well on the practice exams… and thanks for replaying.

@whs2014: thanks for your reasoning. they’re helping me narrow schools as we speak. just curious, how many schools are you applying to? ivies? safe schools?

Whs2014 Chance me? I am also applying to the exact same schools and programs. Cornell AEM and Penn Wharton.

Back @xia0amei: Here’s my gameplan as of now (and I highly doubt it will change): I will be applying to 2 schools early. Georgia Tech is a no-brainer because I live in Georgia and here we have the Zell Miller Scholarship, and essentially if GA students have a 3.7 GPA (CRAZY RIGHT?? This is weighted!) the scholarship will cover their tuition in full. 100%. All of it. However as I mentioned before, Boston College is where I want to go to school. In fact, I would confidently say that I am going to attend if it weren’t for the money… BC is just under 60,000 a year. Not easy on the wallet. But if I can make it work, I’m going to go to BC. I absolutely love and adore everything about that school and there’s nowhere else I want to spend 4 years of my life.

If I manage to get into both, I’ll probably only apply to NYU and the 3 Ivies I listed in my first post. There’s really no reason for me to apply anywhere else; I have my cheap safety school covered, my dream school covered, a very good in between school (in NYU), and I’ll find out where my upperbound is when I apply to the ivies. I’m feeling pretty good about my whole situation, and if there’s anything I can do to help you reach a similar spot I’d absolutely love to!

If I don’t get into Boston College (even the thought is making me a little upset) then I’ll apply to a few other schools around the same level (USC comes to mind) just to give myself that high/mid tier 1 option. However if I don’t get into BC or an ivy (crying) I’ll probably end up at GT. If I don’t get in GT then I’ll apply to a little school called SUNY Geneseo, a nice little school where my father went (their 75% mid range SAT is a 1390 on the 1600 scale, pretty respectable for a backup school that no one’s heard of) as well as some other safety schools with decent business programs.

Honestly I’d love to hear about your interests and stuff. Unfortunately, I do not know you as a person so I can’t be as accurate as I am with my friends for suggesting colleges. One time my friend just gave me a probably major and minor and I knew her well enough to suggest the 8 schools she should apply to. I’m ALWAYS up for learning more about colleges and their programs, so if you’d like to post here or PM stuff you’re interested in I could take a look at it. If you don’t know exactly what I mean I wouldn’t mind sending a PM with all my “interests and stuff” to give you a good idea of what I mean. But, once again, I’m just an interested rising senior and I don’t really know that much. I’d just like to think so :)

@Timberwolf4Life: I only post if I feel it’s necessary; I don’t like useless posts. I’ll definitely take a look though. Also, PM requests instead of posting in other people’s thread. It’s much less rude and makes people more willing to chance you.
