Chance me for Jackson?

Really panicking about applications, posted about chances before but I left out specifics. My biggest question: What are my chances of being accepted based on high school, and what are my chances of being accepted as a transfer student?
My preference is Jackson school of Geosciences, with my second choice being School of Fine Arts. I want to double major anyway, so either school is very much desired.

In state, #10 in class of 60. GPA: UW 3.94/4.00 W 4.9/6.0
High school is a T-STEM (Texas science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Academy Early College. I have lots of unique coursework in engineering and technology courses.

On track to graduate DAP and with an Associates Degree in Science.

Current cumulative GPA is 3.78 but completion of my two summer courses will help.
College Hours earned at Navarro Community College:
Composition and Rhetoric I, Composition & Rhetoric II, State and Local Government, American History, College Algebra,Plane Trigonometry, College Physics I, American History, Art Appreciation, Public Speaking, (Orientation credit)Educational & Career Planning, Microcomputer Applications, Concepts of Fitness/Wellness
=38 credit hours, all earned Junior year and this summer. I earned A's in all classes except Physics I and Plane trigonometry, both of which I had 86/B's in.

Senior Schedule:
Earth and Space Science (DC), Astronomy (DC), 1 semester Calculus (DC) then 1 semester Statistics (DC), British Literature (DC), Economics (DC), Government (DC), Spanish III (I tested and passed for credit in Spanish II), Art IV Drawing and Painting
+possible zero/ninth hour DC courses

SAT: 1890. 650 Critical Reading, 640 Math, 600 Writing, 6 on essay
Taking the SAT again (and ACT for the first time) before application deadline.

ECs:
Unfortunately it has been difficult to keep consistent ECs because I transferred to my current high school halfway through Sophomore year. My high school has next to no EC available, no sports or UIL.
Band/Marching band 6th-9th grade. Unable to continue when transferred.
Been devoted to a student formed band since summer 2008, we've played shows for TOMS shoe events. I play a variety of instruments main ones being keys, mandolin, french horn.
Volunteer at a living history museum 2008-2010, about 60 hours
Founder of Philosophers Club
President of Art Club
Yearbook, senior year
Participated and won some awards in state art competitions, spent hours designing posters for school events, kept a consistent interest in art for many many years.

Essays/Reccomendations:
I expect to get good recommendations from my Engineering, English, and Physics/Chemistry/Earth Science/Astronomy instructor. I write good essays, and expect to get some quality guidance on those from a few teachers.

My only work experience is in babysitting. I've had a consistent job with this watching two girls for 16-20 hours a week. In addition I do pixel art commissions, done about 60 this summer.

Thank you!

Jackson is considered by many to be the back door into UT. They have some of the highest acceptance rates across the university so applicants tend to put it as their second choice to ensure that they get in. I don’t know much about where they like to cut things off but my guess is that you should be in. A 2000 SAT/30 ACT should seal the deal.

Hahahah though I don’t exactly know how to feel about wanting into a department known as the back door, I definitely feel some relief. Thanks so much.

I really don’t know much about the School of Geosciences honestly. I’d recommend getting some other peoples’ opinions before making your own.

Of course, yes. I’m visiting the campus tomorrow with an alumnus, hopefully that will aid in learning about the colleges I’m interested in!

I’m currently in JGS and the reason it has such a “high rate of acceptance” is because not many students apply to it. That’s why people often use it as a back door to get in to the University. But, since it is a fairly small school they only accept around 100 freshman/transfers into the department each year.

I think you have good enough stats to get into the department. Just bring up your SAT to around 2000 and do well on the ACT.

Jackson school of geosciences (geology ) is one of the best in the country… it ranks #3, even better than Stanford’s… according to US daily news : [Best Geology Programs | Top Earth Science Schools | US News Best Graduate Schools](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-earth-sciences-schools/geology-rankings)

@Haunted4eva: That’s why it’s so great that it’s one of the easiest schools to get into at UT!

(I’m in jackson btw)

I don’t know what are your sources for the info that JSG has a high admission rate… I’m an incoming graduate student, heard its a tough school!

@Haunted4eva: I want to attend grad school for geosciences too, but i heard it’s bad to go to the same school one did undergrad. Where else are you applying?

Can you give me some tips on grad school admissions for geosciences? What kind of GPA do I need to get in a decent school? How was the thesis/dissertation or whatever that they make you do? How important is the GRE for admissions? Research?

thanks ;)

I don’t think its bad if you go to the same school for grad studies, especially if its jackson’s, they have HUGE funds for research, scholarships, trips…etc, and besides, I chose to get involved in an industrial oriented research group of jackson that has tons of oil companies sponsoring it, so I might eventually end up working with one of those companies if they like my work… I applied to U of Miami, Rice, Stanford, and UT… I got admission from all except Rice! but I chose to go to UT because I like the research area more! GRE is important but not really vital to determining whether you are going to get in or not… I would say try to get a minimum of 1100… statement of purpose is VERY important… talk very specific about your research interests, and if you did undergrad research, you should talk about it briefly (objective, results…etc)… and say why you chose this particular school, and mention the professor you wanna work and why with as well… best of luck!

I heard it from 2 separate individuals, one of which was an undergraduate in the School. Most of the high rankings I saw were only for graduate school so it may only be the graduate school that is tough to get in to. Either way, I already expressed my doubt about what I said. I’m just passing on what I’ve heard.

Jackson is no longer a “backdoor” to UT, at least not for transfer students. They accept very few transfers each year, reserving most of those relatively few slots for incoming freshmen. I have discussed this at length with my advisor. Also, you will need to meet the math pre-requisite and by being prepared to enroll in mathematic classes beyond 408-sequence Calculus classes. In addition, they only accept admissions during the fall. I hope to enroll in Jackson, but I have not met the math requirement (I’ve only taken Trigonometry - at Texas Tech), so I am doing the 408C/D sequence this year and hoping for a 2012 entrance. I’ve never had calculus, I’m 27, and got out of high school with Algebra I (8th grade), Geometry, and some bullspit class called “Math Money” or something of that ilk. I did, however, get an A in trig at TTU. I started reviewing Algebra I/II 2 weeks ago, as I hear that the majority of points deducted from Calculus exams are for simple arithmetic / algebraic oversights.

Edit: Yet, according to this application for internal transfer: http://www.geo.utexas.edu/undergrad/Internal_Transfer_Application.pdf</a> - the applicant must only meet some general requirements for admission including Chem I, M305G (Pre-Cal) and prepared to enroll in calculus, and a brief sequence of geology courses. I met all of these requirements, have a 3.62 GPA with 52 credit hours from Texas Tech University and was declined admission to Jackson, and instead got in to my second choice major. I guess that demonstrates the competitiveness of the admission process for the transfer students.

Thanks to everyone for their input, I appreciate it! And boneknuckleskin, thanks for the link and requirement info. I’m taking Calculus at my community college this year, which I don’t believe will transfer but I wonder if it will affect that…
