Is Johns Hopkins University going to be a serious reach for me?

Male - Asian (Filipino)
Private, Jesuit High School

GPA: 92.42
(my school's scale considers this a 4.0 because they use the 4.2 scale; probably more like a 3.7)

Very Rigorous Course Load - 6 APs, other Honors courses

SATs:

First Attempt (March 2009)
CR: 550, Math: 660, Writing: 560
Second Attempt (October 2009
CR: 650, Math: 660, Writing: 590
Subject tests: just took them today (Math 1, English Lit, German with Listening)
probably mid 500s for German, and low 600s for the other two

Decent Extra Curriculars - most notably participation in my school's German Exchange, 75 hours of volunteer serivce, a few clubs (president of one), JV lacrosse, a few more little things

I want to major in International Relations. JHU isn't supposed to be nearly as competitive outside of premed, is that true? Do I have a shot?

Unless you apply ED (where your chances are much better), unfortunately I don’t think you’ll make their cut… their int. relations program is slightly less competitive, but still, I think above your stats… I’d suggest American, a great school with an unbelievable int. relations program

I realized that last night and started researching other schools and came across American University, which I already knew about, but never really took the time to look into. I like it and have replaced JHU with it. Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, it’s definitely a big reach. Hopkins has some of the highest average test scores in the country. Unless you can pull up your scores significantly, your chances are slim. Your GPA is pretty solid though but your ECs seem a bit lackluster.

You will definitely get into some good schools, I just don’t know about JHU.
