Chance me for Johns Hopkins University

I just did one of these for some other schools, but I have recently become obsessed with Johns Hopkins University. What can I say - I am a fickle man. JHU seems so perfect for me, so I'd like to hear what you guys think.

GRADES
-GPA: 95.1/100 no weighted classes in my school
-Rank: 18/185
-SAT: math-800, reading-670, writing-710
-SAT II: math 2 and physics (I get these results back in a couple of days. I'm pretty good at figuring out what my scores are going to be for standardized tests. Let's just say I get 800 on math 2 and 720 on physics)
-ACT: composite- 32, math-36, reading-31, English-35, science-27, English/writing-33
-AP: Calc AB- 4, English 11- 3 (my school doesn't offer much in the way of AP)
-College credit: Psych- 4, stats-4, calc I-4, calc II-4, diff. Eq.-4, mech. Physics-4, C++-4, total credit- 28 (all taken at a local college campus)

ACTIVITIES
4 year letterman, soccer and tennis. Soccer captain and all section
Wrestling statistician 2 years
Music stuff. State band junior year, alto sax. Honors, district, region bands. Composition and performance are favorite activities.
Mock trial
Musical cast member
swim instructor for two years and lifeguard. I have taught group classes and private swim lessons (I didn't include this in the last one but it does show leadership and responsibility)

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Maths instructor wrote a good one, music instructor wrote a good one, last one was kinda rushed, so not that great

ESSAYS
I am currently writing a passionate essay about how JHU is perfect for me. It is great for my intended major, BME. Also, Studying at the Peabody intitute would allow me to pursue my passion of recording arts and sciences. I talk about the field of BME and why it excites me so much, and I also give background about why I would want to study at Peabody.

CR is a little low for JHU. Your application will look pretty strong, so you will have a shot. JHU is a reach for most people. Keep working hard. Best of luck.

I fit into their middle 50% for CR. Is it worth retaking in January?

I consider it a mid to high match, but I’m biased.

JHU: high match/low reach
you’d have a better shot if you raised your SAT

Awesome! Yeah I’d consider it between a match and a low reach. Your SAT is not bad at all if all scores are at least in the 25% range, and with that 800 in math it probably wouldn’t be too big of an infraction to have a 670 in CR with it.

Hopefully I will know within an hour those SAT II scores.

And btw, thank you arswan14 for the suggestion. I don’t know why JHU never came up in my entire college search.

Here I am preparing to apply last minute… ugh

I had this happen up until the last month too haha. My original list was all safeties and then Dartmouth, but as time has gone on I’ve had the same sort of thing happen. My reaches (Duke, Vandy, and Yale) were all established in the past few weeks actually haha. It happens; sometimes the best possible school for you is the one that you completely overlook for a long time, and then suddenly BAM it comes out of nowhere! Good luck man!

ok I got a 780 on math 2 and a 660 on physics. Pretty bummed about that, but I shouldn’t be surprised. I took physics I sophomore year and nothing last year, physics II next semester… ugh

Anyways, should I even send these scores to JHU? Will it benefit me or should I just send my ACT scores?

Send your ACT scores. Chance me also: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1594388-will-transfer-better-school-help-me-get-into-my-top-schools-ea.html

Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk

Also, can I self report my SAT I scores through commonapp but only send the official score report for the ACT?

bumping. needs moar opinions.

immasenior- You can send the ACT in through common app, too, but you need to also send it through the ACT website to your colleges. That being said, I wouldn’t say sending the ACT will help or hurt you because your 1470 two score is about a 33 ACT and you have a 32. A 660 on Physics isn’t so bad, I bombed USH and got a 690 and Math II and got a 740. Most schools won’t see it as that big of a deal as long as you stay above a 650.

Alright, I think I’m going to send all my scores through collegeboard.

As far as ACT goes, I’m not sure if I want to send. I feel like a 36 on math looks nice, but if I send SAT I and II, do they even consider my ACT?

I’d say you have a good shot, though it’s impossible to say for certain. I have a feeling your credit won’t be transferable, but it’s still impressive nonetheless. BME is popular major there, so you’re competing with a large number of applicants, but I’d say you’re still good.

Good luck!

36 on Math does look good! But anything kind of lower on science reasoning coupled with that lowish Physics score will set off red flags, I think. Althoughhhh, that 4 on the Physics AP will probably rebalance the ship. So nevermind! Send in all!

No, those are college credits. Not AP. I have only taken Physics I and I’m taking physics II in the spring with a college physics course.

I’d say you have a great shot! And if you don’t make BME you’ll always be considered for the regular college which is easier so that’s a plus. Good luck!

Yeah, BME is super selective there. I think I read somewhere that there are only 100 applicants accepted for BME. Only 1/3 of those applying for BME will be offered a seat, and the other 200 are accepted into JHU, but not Whiting.

On that last post, I meant the BME program, not Whiting :P

Also, I have decided to retake the SAT I in order to improve my reading and writing score. What should I shoot for as far as reading and writing is concerned?

I feel I should be good if I can get reading in the 700s. I’ll probably do some preparation before this test, as it will be my last chance and I really need to do well. It would be nice if I could get 750 on reading and writing, so my superscore would be 2300.

Any suggestion on preparation for the reading and writing portions of the SAT I?

JHU: high match/low reach
