Chance me for Johns Hopkins!

SAT: 2270 (710 M , 800 CR , 760 W (meh))

These scores are from sophomore year and I intend to retake them (project 2350+ according to junior year PSATs). I will also be taking a couple of SATII's and project 700+ for all that I take (I'm a really good tester)

GPA: 4.0

AP scores: Computer Science A (5), World History (5), Spanish Language (5) - sophomore year

Note: People at my school don't take AP classes because all the classes we take are already for college credit.

School: Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS)

Ethnicity: Indian-American Citizen
Gender: Female

I'm currently a junior at TAMS.

Teacher Recs: Will be excellent, I've distinguished myself in most, if not all of my classes.

Essays: I'm a pretty fair writer. I think they will be above average.

Awards:

1) AP Scholar (sophomore year)
2) 5th place, Texas State Geography Bee
3) District Recognition, Poetry and Scholastic regional Gold Key: Poetry
4) Several school-wide awards for Integrated Physics and Chemistry, Biology, Algebra, English I, World Geography
5) Various comp sci programming awards (nothing big, mind you)
6) National Recognition, Duke TIP Talent Search (I've always heard that this was a pretty big deal)
7) Again, I'm playing the "I expect..." game, but I really do think that I will be a NMS

I had a pretty laissez-faire attitude about the rat race known as college admissions before sophomore year but have now concluded that I need to step it up and consequently am a lot more involved in my studies... A lot of things are bound to happen this year!

ECs (Again, only what I put on app)
1) Genomics research with Harvard alum at UNT, expecting to coauthor paper with professor and participation in Intel or Siemens (if all goes as planned)
2) Key Club, past 2 years, 250+ hours of community service so far with more to come this summer
3) Member of School Judicial Board
4) President, Beta Club
5) President, Computer Science Club
6) TAMS research organization
7) Spanish National Honors Society (will receive scholarship at end of year for maintaining a 99.3 cumulative semester average over 3 years)
8) Will be inducted into National Honors Society next year

Summer plans: I'm applying for Research Undergraduate Experiences at both Rice University and Harvard Medical School (please read explanation below to explain my eligibility). I'm also considering applying to TASP. I doubt I'll get into all 3, so I'm hoping not to have any difficult choices to make this Summer!

Here's a little clarification of my circumstances: TAMS is a two year residential program at the University of North Texas which allows high school juniors to complete the last two years of high school concurrently with the first two years of college. If a TAMS graduate were to attend UT Austin or any public college in Texas, he or she would most likely be classified as a junior. The rules work a little bit differently for private colleges, but it makes no difference to me.

TAMS students can be dually identified as both high school and college students when it suits them, and thus, I am eligible to apply for research positions normally targeted towards college undergraduates... which doesn't mean that I'll be accepted, of course, but I'll try nonetheless.

Now I'm aware that a lot of this profile is expected, projected, or planned, but I do not think that most of my assumptions can be classified as wishful thinking based on my past performance. In short, I believe I've set some very realistic goals that I have a high chance of meeting (except possibly TASP, lol), so please assess my chances accordingly.

If there are any components of the application I've failed to mention, please don't hesitate to tell me . If there are any other college suggestions you'd like to give me, I'd appreciate that as well.

Happy Holidays!

I realize the post is rather lengthy, but if it helps at all, you don’t have to read the huge blocks of text at the end… now will you chance me?

Whew :). Provided that the TAMS circumstance is understood (I admit I needed to read it twice), I would safely say you have a superb chance. Make sure you follow through; I would definitely want to be ready to successfully hit any new admit curve when the time comes.

Other than that, what do you personally see in JHU? It may put things in better perspective, especially with your evident research interest.

Best for a good break!

Well, I’m considering going into BME, and I’ve heard that JHU has the best undergrad program in the country.

When I was in the 8th grade, I had to do a report on JHU, and I completely fell in love with everything else about it, so it’s like a match made in heaven.

Thanks for your reply!

Publishing a paper in a peer-reviewed journal would give your app the punch that it lacks right now.

Otherwise, you have a pretty good chance at JHU.

Any more ideas?

I think your a pretty solid candidate…

then again, my opinion is rather vague because i am a canadian student so we don’t receive those amazing opportunities such as research and dual credit enrollment.

But wow, academically bright, and have some “unique” ECs(reason i put unique in quotations is because lot of peoples chance threads i read have similar stuff, so i don’t know what to classify as unique for an american student candidate)

Anyways, if you dont get into to JHU at least( BME is a 2nd admission after getting into JHU first) i might have a slim chance lol

And heres also something in your favour-

I recently read an article in New Science talking about how lots of universities are now favouring females in engineering, so you have an extremely wonderful chance because they want females to be interested in engineering, not just general sciences or other areas of academics.

anyways, i came to voice a point of view and hopefully it kind of helped lol

AND LIKE THE BOLLYWOOD MOVIES GO-

ALL THE BEST!!!

p.s. if you havent figured it out yet, im indian to :P

Haha, yeah I figured that.

I have plenty of time to “decorate” my app, so I’m happy that you think it’s acceptable in this rough state.

Thanks!
