aiming for brown or columbia early decision. Any feedback would be appreciated

I’m not sure about your chances, but retaking a SAT where you already got 2 perfect scores and a 730 might even look bad since it looks like you’re just wasting even more time on it than you need to. I mean you already have a really great score, and unless you want to major in English (even then it would barely matter), I highly doubt getting a higher score in CR will help you a lot.

That being said, I think Cornell, Brown and Columbia are still low reaches (but don’t take my word for it) as they are for most students. What really matters now is how you do your essays and how great your recs are. The fact that you’ve published not 1 but 2 papers is going to greatly help your chances and I think you’re a strong candidate overall.

If you’ve taken the SAT ‘many times’ (>2?) then taking it again will be of little value.

Which of the 8 schools are the ‘lower Ivies’? Six of the 8 have admit rates of 10% or less, (Columbia is second lowest at 7%), Penn has a hardly welcoming 13% rate and Cornell brings up the rear at 17%. Your profile is strong but with admit rates like that all of the Ivies are reaches for any candidate.

I’m sorry, but please don’t give Brown, Columbia, etc. the reputation of being “lower Ivies.” Your stats are extremely impressive, but they’re among the most selective colleges in the US. Seeing as you are Asian, your chances may go down significantly. Don’t underestimate the schools that aren’t Harvard.

I shouldn’t answer since you are using that offensive term to describe great schools.

Don’t waste time retaking the SAT’s. No point, that is not going to make or break you. Spend time on your essays.

The great research EC that you have is always a big plus, but no one can chance you. They can only tell you that you are in range with accepted students, but you already knew that.

I sincerely apologize for my mistake. I myself recently found out about the ivy league schools from my friends about a year ago. I’m not an extreme expert on this college topic but my friends always called the colleges that weren’t harvard “lower ivies” so I thought that’s just how it was. I didn’t realize I was underestimating or degrading such great schools. I honestly would love to get into any of them! I will learn from my mistake! Thank you!

Your GPA- lower than average for these schools

Your SAT- higher than avg

Your EC’s- not “amazing” if it is just what you mentioned; actually kind of weak, but I’m sure you haven’t listed everything

Maybe mention your class rank? That is important in assessing your GPA. Top 5 in class would be good.

I put the lower Ivies at high reaches for now, as they are for most people. Take what I say with a grain of salt though, I am only 16 and a rising senior.

By the way, could you chance me back? I would really appreciate it! ^_^

@lastspartan just chanced u My rank will most likely be 8 or so by the end of junior year. Not the best I know. Yeah my extracurriculars go way deeper than I mentioned though (I’m pretty confident in them, its just my GPA and rank I’m very worried about) Given my rank, would u still say the same thing you said before?

Brown and Columbia are your idea of “lower ivies”? Columbia has a little higher than 6% acceptance rate… I know it’s not Yale or Princeton but it’s just as competitive to get into. Your chances are good but compared to everyone else who applies your scores are just average. So go all out on the essays! I think you have a better chance for Brown, and a really high chance for Cornell!

@lastspartan that’s kinda scary lolll good luck to you too! I feel you’re going to do great :)

@DreamAway yeah i’ve been getting kind of pounded on today for calling those prestigious schools “lower ivies” and now im just kind of feeling like a jerk…
I’m considering cornell too so thanks!

You should def apply to Cornell, I think you have a really good chance and it’s a great school. The rest of the ivies are tough to judge sometimes because we always see the perfect people with perfect scores get rejected so it gets me kind of scared I wish you all the best!
