The only reason I want to go to Ut Austin is for McCombs or for the Petroleum Engineering program. I'd like to take the pre med pre Reqs as well. Any chance for merit aid? Chances for these programs?

I’d say youve got a good shot at engineering. Your chances for McCombs are pretty low, I’d say 20-30%. Your rank is a little on the low side, if you were in the top 2-4% I’d say that would move your chances up, your SAT is also low, try to get that to a 2100+ by studying for the next time you take it. You should definitely still apply though!

Okay thanks for the reply! Is there any chance I’ll receive any scholarships from ut Austin?

I’d say you have a pretty good chance at McCombs. Increasing your SAT score will definitely help. McCombs doesn’t usually give out scholarships though, so you might want to apply to some outside ones. Good luck!

Bump!!! Thanks for the suggestions so far guys.

Bump!!!
Received more ap scored
Psych-5
Apush-4
English-4
Human geo-5

I’d say mccombs is a maybe

cockrell will most likely take you no problem

just apply for mccombs for 1st choice and cockrell 2nd choice in case you don’t get into mccombs

except…when i hear people say they’re considering either engineering or business
i get puzzled because they’re very different fields of interest o.O
it seems as though you would know which one you’d like more and just go for that.

Can someone please tell me why he has a better chance at Petroleum Engineering than Business? I thought that they were both equally difficult to get into. Moreover, in order to get into Cockrell don’t you need heavy science E.C’s/SAT 2/AP scores?

Is his rank holding him back from McCombs? I’m just curious so I can compare it to myself.
Thanks.

based on my children and peers…Engineering (especially this last year) looks heavily at math and science classes and standardized test scores. My son who was not an auto admit (but close) was admitted to engineering…he had perfect math scores and all science and math aps with 5s.

McCombs does seem to look more at leadership, class rank , extra curriculars than the engineering school.
But as the poster above noted…they are such different fields of study and you should truly explore the different career paths. Engineering is much more challenging math and science…much more difficult coursework than business. But McCombs has the top accounting school in the nation so it is the most competitive college major to get into at UT…because of the numbers of applicants.

If you truly want to do engineering, you should choose two engineering majors as your choices. If you are uncertain and want to try business, at least take the more difficult engineering math classes and then you can more easily transfer into engineering.

What do you think I should do to make myself a lock for McCombs?
