Chance me for merit scholarship?

Hey guys, I'm really interested in Pitt and was wondering what chances I have for a merit scholarship. I'm not expecting full-tuition, or even half tuition, but a small one would be nice! Thanks!!!! (p.s. I'm a white male in PA)

GPA:
Freshman: UW-4.0 W-4.25
Sophmore: UW-4.0 W-4.32
Junior: UW- 4.0 W-4.52

Class rank: around 4%

(academic history freshman year, but the rest are all honors/ APs; straight A's in all)

SAT:
2000: Math (700) Writing (660) Reading (640) (8 on essay)
1340 (M & CR)

SAT II:
Biology- 750
(might be taking a math one in the fall)

AP:
Junior: AP Biology and AP Calc AB (A's on both); 5's on both tests
Senior: AP Chem, AP Physics, AP Lang, AP Gov, and AP Calc C w/III

Extracurricular Activities:
Venture Crew (president)
Key Club (100+ hours of community service)
Executive Council
NHS
Alto Sax in band (since 5th grade)
1 year of JV volleyball
Stand Tall Club

(P.S. I took pre-calc over the summer after Sophomore year to get ahead, so I basically skipped from Alg 2 to AP Calc. I'm not sure if this will affect anything, but I'm going to have my counselor mention it in my LOR.)

Thanks!!!!

Your GPA is really good but your SAT is too low to get a scholarship from UHC. You want to be at AT LEAST 1400 M+CR, and last year the rumor was that a 1550 M+CR was needed for most people to get a scholarship.

It’s also harder for in-state students to get merit money compared to out of state as you are competing against many more students who apply, and UHC favors diversity.

What major are you applying into? SSOE might give you a $2k or $4k/year book scholarship based on your GPA and Math SAT.

Thanks for the reply, and Bioengineering.

In that case you may end up with at least a book scholarship! Apply early for sure.

I will!! Thanks again :)!

1550 Math + CR damn that is super high. We sort of got an email that implied if we didn’t visit our consideration for scholarships wouldn’t be that good. But its across from country from SF to Pitt so a little expensive, even with school chipping in $500 dollars. Debating it. Our son had a combined 1480 and is mixed Asian. Still doing math on how pricey a trip would be.

santookie: there is no guarantee you will get a full tuition scholarship if you visit so don’t worry if you can’t. I believe they will still give your son full consideration for scholarships so just apply!

The scores for full tuition scholarships have gone up every year. Five years ago when older child applied, the minimum score to be considered was 1350 SAT. The are accepting applications already so apply early!!!

hi santookie, my niece got full tuition honors scholarship and did not visit because they also live far. applied before 12/1 had all As with honors and AP courses. and an ACT of 34. she’s caucasian.

Santookie, Pitt loves its Californian students! Almost everyone whom I knew from CA had a scholarship. Visiting the campus and interviewing have ZERO effect on your chances of admission or scholarship (I didn’t visit Pitt until after I had both) so just apply. But show interest by having a full application: letters of rec, essay, and a resume/list of activities

The 1550 M+CR number was actually info that came from Pitt, and that number was the minimum for an invitation to interview for the full-ride (Chancellor’s Scholarship). Full tuition scholarships had no such minimum, but they were also very competitive - but there was a much wider range. Check out the old threads.

Ah you’re right. Sorry for the mix-up.

With that said, being an in-state student (from PA) and white (majority ethnicity) does make it harder to get full tuition, as the UHC tends to favor OOS students, and more minority students for that. SSOE also does not give full-tuition away very easily, as most are alumni-based scholarships and very hard to get (I know mine could only be given to the top of the class of the major). So my main point still stands-- a higher SAT is needed if jsd would like a full-tuition scholarship

Thanks again AO! Do you think I would have any chances of getting into the Honors College or is my SAT too low for that also?

According to the site ([Eligibility to Enroll in UHC Courses | Honors College | University of Pittsburgh](http://www.honorscollege.pitt.edu/node/226)) you need a M+CR of 1400+ to be automatically eligible (Also top 5% of class but since different schools rank differently or don’t rank at all, this tends to not matter). You’re kind of close, and I know in the past they’ve had exceptions and let more people in so I don’t know.

As of now all I can imagine is that you won’t be able to live in UHC housing freshman year unless they still have openings after all the auto-eligible people apply. In terms of taking classes you’ll be fine: UHC tends to let ANYONE take their classes!

Sounds good, getting into Honors College would just be extra for me anyway. I loved Pitt!

As long as you maintain >3.25 after your first semester you’ll automatically be UHC eligible for everything, including housing as an upperclassman!

Oh wow, that’s awesome! I didn’t realize that :)
