Good day mates! I'm a junior from Minnesota, and I will soon prepare a list of colleges that I want to apply to so that I could plan my letters of recommendation early and make my application process for next year less stressful. What chance do I have at the following colleges?

-St. Olaf (in-state)
-UMN-Twin Cities(in state)
-Wisconsin-Madison(practically considered in-state due to the MN-WI reciprocity)
-Iowa State
-Iowa
-Michigan-Ann Arbor
-Carleton College(in-state and sister will graduate there)

And here are my stats:
-3.76 W GPA by the end of this year (school doesn't unweight, but it might be a 3.65 and no class rank either)
-28 ACT score (30 English 29 Math 8 Writing)
-1 AP class sophomore year (Got a 4), two this year, and two next year
-Decent extra-curricular activities (60+ volunteering hours at Key Club, Speech Team this year, Track and Field this year and next year, and a some leadership roles as well as Band during 9th Grade)

I'm also African-American if that makes any difference. So what chances do I have? Thanks! And I'll chance back.

I think you have a great chance at almost all of those schools! Other than Carleton, I think they’re all matches to high matches. If you got your ACT up to 32+, you’d have a great shot there too! You’re GPA is great, and your EC’s are really good too! Keep up the good work!

Thanks! Anybody else there to chance me?

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor is definitely a reach, especially considering that you are out of state. Michigan is also really expensive for out of state students. Probably even Carleton and St. Olaf are cheaper (being in state is not relevant for them, unless you live in Northfield). Actually, Carleton is a reach too. The others are either matches or safeties.

Michigan is still worth applying to, because it is better than the others, unless you really want a small school. You might get in. Michigan is about as good as it gets for state universities. Only Berkeley, UCLA, UNC-Chapel Hill, (and perhaps UVa or U.Texas-Austin) can compare.

I second that UMich is a reach and would say it is an incredibly high reach. MIchigan relies on your unweighted GPA, so keep that in mind. Great school but you will find that it is as tough to get into as an ivy. It’s not impossible though, so you never know!

-St. Olaf-match/high match
-UMN-Twin Cities-match (does depend on major, though)
-Wisconsin-Madison-match/high match
-Iowa State-safety
-Iowa-safety
-Michigan-Ann Arbor-high reach
-Carleton College-high reach
get a couple more points on the act and you’ll be set for most, good luck!
chance me back?
Because you are a URM, I think your chances are better than others are saying. But getting your ACT to at least a 30 would help all the way around. You have a year to raise your score – I’d suggest you hit the books and retest. Maybe try the SAT, too.
