Might qualify for National Merit Semifinalist

I am a strong STEM student but did not participate in math and science competitions. WIll that be a disadvantage?

“I am a strong STEM student but did not participate in math and science competitions. WIll that be a disadvantage?”

Definitely not. I can assure you. Take a guess why. (Class of '23 here).

SAT seems fine (avg/slightly above avg_ for both (in case ur worried)

“Might qualify for National Merit Semifinalist” good award to have, though non-distinguishing. Doesnt put your app at a disadv.

Athletics only counts if ur going as a recruited athlete, otherwise its just considered as an ‘ok activity’ IMO.

Everything is solid overall.

EC’s seem less, but that doesnt mean you wont get in. What matters more is the time invested, stuff learnt and experienced, and any achievements there. As long as thats profound, I’d say its a go.

Feel free to PM for any further clarifications or pointers.

Thanks so much for your response.

Oh… another pointer in mind, I’m a CS major… so that at CMU is ultra competitive.
at MIT, there’s no distinction by major/schools and scores/grades, but at CMU it is.
SO for MIT I’d say ur scores at slightly above avg at best (nothing that’ll pull u down, be proud)…

But for CMU Cog. Sci +Ling… ur scores are defo much above avg.

THe rest is great IMO, but its fit in context of ur essays and EC’s will be determined by the adcom

This is what makes the process random…nothing is guaranteed. THe only assurance an app can get is if their application doesnt have any spots… which ur seems to not…
