Hi, my name is Jay and I want to go to MIT and major in biological engineering. I applied early admission to MIT, and was deferred and I'm hoping that people could give me an idea of what my chances are.

SAT total, 2130
SAT Math 790
SAT Reading 710
SAT Writing 630 (Low point)
SAT Essay 8 (also low)

SAT subject test Math 1:800
SAT subject test Bio E: 720
SAT subject test Math 2: 800
SAT Subject test Chemistry: 800
SAT Subject test American History: 720

4.809 weighted GPA
3.769 unweighted GPA

Class rank, 23/474 (I really hate English classes)

I've taken 5 AP Classes so far, and I'm taking 4 more this year.
AP Biology: 5
AP World History: 3
AP Enviromental Science: 5
AP Statistics: 4
AP US History: 4
I'm currently taking AP Chem, AP Physics B, AP Calculus AB, and AP American Gov.

I'm a National Merit Scholar Finalist.

I volunteer time with my church's middle school youth group. I'm on the Boards of National Honor Society (An academic club), Green Club (an Environment club) , and Fellowship of Christian Athletes at my school. I am the Co-founder of the Science Club at my school and I was the designer of the project we submitted to the Lemleson-MIT InvenTeams competition and we were Finalists in that competition. I am a starter on the academic competition team at my school. I will be interning at a tomato research facility over this upcoming summer. I did very well in my interview and I have a total of four letters of recommendation that I submitted to MIT. My essays are very good (At least my English teachers thought so), but I'm assuming that most people who are applying to MIT will have very good essays.

You’re a below average to average applicant at both MIT and Harvard. Academics are good enough, but extracurriculars are lacking a bit. If your essays are phenomenal and show your uniqueness, then you have a chance.

I’d say you have a slim chance at getting into one of those colleges. Your grades are alright. It’d be better if you could get them up a bit, though… However, you need more extracurriculars. If you don’t have any other clubs at your school that you feel you’d enjoy participating in, then start your own! That’s something that could help. And like WoolyMammoth said, having uniqueness in your essays will be necessary if you’re going to get in. I included a link to my thread below, I’d appreciate it if you left a response.

you have an pretty good chance for MIT I ould say, definitely over Harvard. Harvard ould probably be a reach. If your essays ere very strong i believe you have a good chance at MIT because your strong science and math grades/SATs

You seem to be strong in math and science; if you used your essays to portray yourself in an unique/interesting way then you probably have a shot at MIT.

You’re standardized test scores are fine but I think the chief reasons why you were deferred were your lowish GPA and your lack of significant ECs. Though the Inventeam thing is cool- I wish my school told me about something like that but oh well.
Nevertheless, good luck to you sir! Hope we both get in!

Nothing in particular caught my eye, but I haven’t had the privilege of seeing your essay which may be able to change my thoughts. From what I see here, however, I would say your chances are leaning a tad on the slim side; moreover, you seemingly have a better chance at MIT in comparison to Harvard.

Nonetheless, I wish you luck, both in admissions, and at the college which you ultimately attend! (:

i would send ACT not SAT. Scores are pretty good. Top 5% of rank. You got National Merit Semifinalist. I guess you are pretty well off academically. ECs are pretty average. Do you have any awards that are worth mentioning? You got a decent chance.

Waverly, do you have any particular thing that makes my application not likely to be accepted at MIT or Harvard? Can I send them something extra to help my application?

Pianocomp, the reason I like MIT is not just because of the rigorus academics, but the really nerdy culture there. I’m a geek, and I think I’d really fit in at MIT or Harvard because of that.

Andy 436, I sent both just because I knew someone who was deferred just because they didn’t send their ACT (The person was later accepted). As far as awards go, I have just a few school academic/character awards and a Scholarship to a Georgetown summer program junior year.

Also, I forgot to add that I was a founding member of Mu Alpha Theta at my school. I was also homeschooled from second grade to eigth grade, is that a possible hook?

One of my essays was about Volunteering in the poorest city in the US, would that make a difference?
