Hi, my name is Jay and I want to go to MIT and major in biomedical engineering. I'm applying early admission to MIT and I'm hoping that people could give me an idea of what my chances are.

SAT subject test Math 1:800
SAT subject test Bio E: 720

4.637 weighted GPA
3.777 unweighted GPA

I've taken 5 AP Classes so far, and I'm taking 4 more this year.
AP Biology: 5
AP World History: 3
AP Enviromental Science: 5
AP Statistics: 4
AP US History: 4
I'm currently taking AP Chem, AP Physics B, AP Calculus AB, and AP American Gov.

I volunteer time with my church's middle school youth group. I'm on the Boards of National Honor Society, Green Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes at my school. I am the Co-founder of the Science Club at my school and I was the designer of the project we submitted to the Lemleson-MIT InvenTeams competition and we were Finalists in that competition. I am a starter on the academic competition team at my school. I will be interning at a tomato research facility over this upcoming summer. I did very well in my interview and I have a total of four letters of recommendation that I am submitting to MIT. My essays are very good, but I'm assuming that most people who are applying to MIT will have very good essays.

I would say that you have a very good chance. It all really comes down to teacher recommendations and essays. I think that your EC’s are perfectly on point

Your academics are good. Your extracurricular activities seem good, but it would help if we had more info on some of them. For instance, what have you done as a board member of the three clubs you are an officer of? The determining factors will be your essays and recommendations.

Remember, admissions essays are not just a test of your composition skills. They also serve as your “voice”. Try to show the admissions officers a side of you that is not readily apparent from the application. I would say you have a good shot at it (for an MIT application). My vote goes for low reach.

I am also someone like you, so you definitely cant fully trust me.

You have a already decided your field of interest.
Your ECs are focused.</and>

You better write really creative essays that completely reflect your interest.

If you want the truth, your chances are not good. MIT accepts about 10% of the applicatants. I think you will be below the applicant pool in the following areas:
SAT Subject Test - most applicants will be 780-800 and have taken Math2 not Math1
Your ACT Essay of 6 is very weak - applicants will be in the 10-12 range
Unweighted GPA of 3.777 is below avg for MIT - applicants will be in te 3.9+ range

To be frank, my hook is that I was going to be doing tomato research this past summer, but was unable to do so because of circumstances that were out of my hands. Also as per the science subject test, the 25th-75th percentile range is 720-800, so I’m on the low end of the spectrum, but I’m still in it. As per the essay, I have broken my right wrist twice and therefore my handwriting is very shabby. And I have no excuse for my GPA, I got some B’s in classes I should have aced. I’m still in the top 5% of my class but barely so. With those in mind are my chances any better?

Your ACT essay score is low for MIT, regardless of your handwriting problems. Also, your SAT II Bio score, while in MIT’s middle 50%, is less than impressive.

Even so, your ECs seem to be focused on your major so I’d say that MIT is a high reach but not unattainable.

I think that although your application is fairly focused, everything else is a little lacking compared to other candidates. You seem to enjoy science and all, but you don’t seem to have any spectacular accomplishments, which could’ve been supplemented with a little bit more… well-roundness. Overall, I think you have a fair shot, but it’s still a bit of a reach.

A fair shot is all I could hope for. As per being an underrepresented minority, I’m a white male with freckles and brown hair, so that’s a no go. I’m also not an athlete by any stretch of the imagination, and I have no legacy.

Thanks Krislu, I know that MIT is a reach but it’s my dream school. I was considering taking the Math 2 however I don’t have my trig identities memorized and I didn’t want that to hurt my score so I just aced the Math 1 instead.

I’d still recommend taking math level IIC. If you’re applying to MIT, you should be able to get an 800 with a few weeks of prep (assuming you take it in either November or December).

The only problem with that is I’m a national merit scholar semi-finalist and I need to get SAT scores that are at the same level as my PSAT scores so I’m already signed up for the SAT I for both of those dates. If I do well enough in november, I’ll probably take the math II.
