Guys, listen, I've been a high-achieving student. Some of you are even going to make fun of me for this. But I consider school my only way out of a depressing city and household.

Will I get in? I have been working for this since I was 8 years old. But there are so many people on college confidential with the same stats! And I'm worried about my essay too.

Please! Just chance me! Chance me! I am so worried about this; I decided to join CC today to try to allay my concerns.

I'll chance back if I can.

What is your GPA? If you have a solid GPA 3.9+ I would say
Harvard - low reach
Yale - reach
MIT - reach/mid reach maybe due to race
Stanford - low reach

Look into Cornell and Brown, Northwester, Colombia - much better chances there

Stellar SAT I and SAT IIs! Pretty good ECs, maybe just do one or two more things to kick it up a notch. Not to mention, being a URM will help :P

chance me please?! i’m extremely worried too lol, so we’re in the same boat: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1482055-chances-hyp.html

Guys,

My unweighted GPA is a 3.8. My weighted GPA is a 4.34.

What do you mean by URM?

Great job so far! The only thing that worries me is the lack of community service and any of those “wow” achievements that so many of the students enrolled at the top schools seem to have. It’s a reach for all of them, but I think MIT has the best chance due to your apparent aptitude in math and science. The lesser Ivies would be better fits, along with Berkeley. Something along those lines could secure a spot. You can get into the tops, sure, but it’s not likely (is it ever?).

2340, 3.8, low income, URM, and with decent ECs. Things are looking good for you, my friend. Btw, have u heard of questbridge? It would be well worth your time to apply.

Let me put it this way…I would be VERY surprised if you did not get into at least one of those schools if not all of them. Yes, the majority of people applying to MIT, Yale, Stanford, etc. all have similar credentials, but you’re African American and you come from a troublesome background. That is a HUGE advantage, that is when it comes to applying to schools. As for essays, I’m sure you know that colleges care about being able to get a sense of the applicant more so than the actual topic. Write about something that is emotional for you, i.e. you’re troubled background. That sells. Best regards!

You will get into nearly every school you apply to.

African American + Stellar Academics = Great Chances at every school.

Congrats dude! Your hardwork will pay off when you get accepted everywhere

While it looks really impressive (and I am sure it is), I think you are making a big mistake taking such high level math courses while you’re in high school. The quality if your complex analysis course is likely very diluted compared to its fourth year college counter-part.

However, I feel very strongly that you will be accepted. I am in an honors math degree myself.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

By the way, about the complex analysis, I’m going to be doing an independent study with a few other students and the head of the math department.

You got this. Just write a good essay, unique.

Who is the head of the math department? Is he a PhD? I would recommend taking high level math classes at MIT, Yale, or wherever you get accepted. That’s what you’re going to college for, right? Taking all of the classes before you get there is a little nonsensical IMO.

Also, you may think that you’re learning all of the material you need to know for calculus in high school, but it’s really not the same. I took Calc AB in high school; 97% in the class, 5 on the exam, and honors calculus I in university was at least a dozen times harder.

In regard to your original question, though, that you will get into at least one is very likely IMO.

Trust me, I’m pretty good at math (I’ve written some published essays)

mathguy216, ignore these guys and keep doing your thing. You’re already in at these universities, what really will factor into your decision is how much money each school gives you.
