I am a high school sophomore this year and have just started looking at colleges. Target major right now is Biomedical Engineering but I’m not dead set yet. I go to a very rigorous high school in a very competitive district and many from my district have been accepted into the ivies before. My district goes on a weighted 5.0 GPA scale where AP and PreAP classes count as 5.0 credits and normal academic classes plus electives count as 4.0 credits. I currently have a 4.35 weighted GPA and 3.92 unweighted GPA. My SAT is a 1510 and ACT is 33, but I’m going to retake these again this summer (because I’m a sophomore and have time to improve them) as well as take some SAT subject tests . I am very active in fine arts extracurricular activities as well. I’m an officer (uniform chair) of my school’s Choir department, I’m in the varsity top-level choir at my school plus my school’s show choir and by the time I graduate I will be a 7 year choir member (this is an award in my school district). I am also a member of MNHS (music national honor society), and I made Texas All State Mixed Choir as 1st chair Soprano 1 (1st in state basically) this year and have participated twice in the UIL solo and ensemble contest: my freshman year earning a superior rating on a class 2 solo and this year a superior rating on a class 1 solo (so this year I advance to state). I am active in my school’s theater department and have been in several shows both in my school’s company and outside of school through community theater. I am also a member of my high school’s Thespian Troupe (troupe 7014, and this is basically national honor society for theater). I am also a member of my high school’s chapter of NHS and do a lot of volunteering with my church. I’ve also dabbled in my school’s Science Olympiad team some, we were 1st this year in state and are advancing to nationals. Does this point towards strong candidacy?
This sounds like a strong candidacy for a musical theater department. I don’t see how MIT or engineering come into play.
@nerdsoprano:
While I didn’t reach the same conclusion as yucca10, I was surprised after you seemed non-committal on Biomedical, you didn’t share other thinking on your interests.
I had a number of MIT classmates with backgrounds similar to yours. They all had demonstrated their capability for science & math. And they thrived at MIT.
Arts are strong at MIT. See https://arts.mit.edu/classes/academic-sections/
WRT to your subject: “Chance me”, do know that anyone giving you chances at such competitive schools will be like throwing darts at a dart board. Even the experienced MIT admissions counsellor who occasionally hangs out here has stated in his blogs that even he is unable to provide chance guidance.
All the best.
@jpm50
The only reason I’m non fully committed to Biomedical Engineering is because I also have interests in Genetic Engineering and I’m debating between the two since they’re similar. Math and sciences are very strong courses for me and I have competed for dynamic planet and astronomy for Science Olympiad several times and I do well in my events, and arts is always something I will always pursue on the side. Thank you
Sorry if I sounded too harsh, I didn’t mean to comment on your chances or fit for MIT but rather on things you chose to highlight in this post.
