<p>okay, here's my list of top schools (roughly in this order):
Stanford
Rice
UVA (in state)
Washington U. St Louis
Harvard
U of Chicago
Olin College of Engineering
Duke
Note: I'm from Virginia, which I'm told will help if i apply to Rice, but shouldn't affect my chances anywhere else (except UVA of course)</p>

<p>Here's my Stats/EC's
GPA: roughly 3.95 unweighted, 4.42 out of 4 weighted.</p>

<p>SAT: 2120 on my first try, taking it on my next opportunity and i should hopefully get a 2200+ (I got a 230 on the PSAT)</p>

<p>ACT: 33 composite, first try</p>

<p>Course Load: 10 APs for HS (6 as a senior), 5's on all AP tests</p>

<p>Rank: 6th out of roughly 350</p>

<p>ECs: (i KNOW they're weak, haha)
Sports: No school sports, 3 seasons of basketball and 6 seasons of baseball (fall and spring) for rec leagues during HS (i doubt that even counts for anything but w/e)</p>

<p>Clubs: 4 year member of Future Business Leaders of America (3 years as an officer and currently President)
2 year member of Key Club (1 yr officer)
1 year of Math Club
3 years of French Club
2 years of French Honors Society (1 as VP)
1 year of officer-at-large for Sr. Class Council
2 year member of National Honors Society</p>

<p>Community Service: not much currently (under 50 hrs), but should hopefully have 200+ by application deadlines (with Habitat for Humanity)</p>

<p>other factors:
I was accepted into the prestigious Governor's Foreign Language Academy for Virginia, a 3-week full-immersion program for French (guess that might help?)
won around half a dozen various academic awards from my school, in 5 different subjects (not very prestigious or anything, but possibly worth mentioning at least to show that I'm well-rounded as far as classes)</p>

<p>Major Interest: Civil Engineering or Business</p>

<p>Your current SAT score makes it difficult to say Stanford, Harvard, Rice, Duke and U of Chicago are anything but reaches for you. Not sure why being from VA gives you a leg up on Rice, is that an under-represented state? Your SAT score will hurt you at Rice, regardless of what state you reside in. I hope you understand that you are a good candidate for most schools however imo your current list is overly top-heavy, given your current stats and resume, and needs more “meat in the middle”. I hope you have some B+ schools on your list as well, just in case. Bear in mind, most applicants at these top-tier schools will have better test scores and better EC’s than you currently have.</p>

<p>jshain- yeah, I’ve asked around and it seems that for Rice, over half of the applicants are from Texas, and since its obviously not a state school, that makes it easier for out-of-staters, specifically from further away like the East Coast.

<p>Also, I do have some slightly lower-level schools on my list, such as William and Mary and Virginia Tech (both in-state).</p>

<p>Is the OP match for Olin with that kind of Stats? No offense to the OP but I don’t think so. </p>

<p>Perhaps you’re not very familiar with the school.</p>

<p>RML- you’re exactly right, i was sort of confused when all 3 responded saying Olin was a match. I’d say Olin’s more of a reach for me than Rice, WU-StL, and UofC</p>

<p>I would say you’re probably correct about Olin, RML. OP would definitely be on the low end with those SAT scores, but the GPA helps offset that fact a little. Sagert, I still think WashUStL is not a match. They definitely have an applicant pool that consistently scores higher on the SAT’s, so I would use this same logic to argue the same point about WashU.</p>

<p>jg, even though a nice % of applicants are from TX, the OOS app pool is extremely competitive and any decided advantage by being from afar quickly vanishes. Just my opinion and that’s what makes the world go around. Hope you’re right, because my son is applying there…</p>

<p>Yes, but WUSTL is also known for accepting a high volume of applicants so that the college has a significant pool to enroll in their weeder entry classes.</p>

<p>jshain and others- how much would my shots at any of these schools go up if i DID get a 2200 or higher on the SAT?
Also, I forgot to mention that I’m considering applying ED to Rice… that would help, right?</p>

<p>I believe Olin College of Engineering is super reach for everyone just like Harvard and Stanford are. Olin is super selective. Their applicant pool is very high. The college accepts only the best and the brightest. Here’s last year’s data. This year’s data is even more impressive. Next year’s would be even more impressive than this year’s, I recon. In my understanding, Olin is as selective as Caltech, Berkeley college of engineering and Harvey Mudd. </p>
