Chance Me for NC Schools, Please!

Eek, I think I initially posted this in the wrong category. Anyway, I live in NC & will be going to college in state (money)... so I wanted to know about my chances!

GPA (weighted/unweighted): 4.3/3.7
Current SAT (will take twice more, confident I will do better): 1790. Aiming for 2K+

APs Taken Junior Year
-AP English IV

APs Planned for Senior Year:
-AP English V
-AP Statistics
-AP Envrionmental Science
-AP Computer Science

Long-term commitment (as of next year) / EC:
-Newspaper (Junior & Senior Year)
-Spanish club member (3 years)
-Track (2 seasons)
-After school job (3 years)
-Literary-magazine editor (2 years)
-Newspaper Editor-in-chief (1 year)

Significant Achievements:
-Designed & maintained first edition of online school newspaper

I am interested in the following NC schools:
-UNC Chapel Hill
-NC State
-Appalachian State
-Elon
-UNC Asheville
-ECU (major safety).

In addition, I will very likely apply for the teaching fellows scholarship. My graduation project includes 15+ hours of teaching in a neighboring high school, if that adds anything.

UNC CH is the only one you are going to have trouble with. You have an average rigor with the weakest science AP, a weaker math AP and no history AP. However it appears as if you might apply to journalism and you do have the Ec’s to match that. Honestly it might come down to what area you are in. What county are you in? If you are in a weaker and less populated county then it will be easier however if you live in wake county, then it will be harder to get into CH. Honestly I would probably make it a low reach for you. The rest are matches or safety’s. You might get denied by some if they think you think of them as safety so don’t worry if you get denied or wait listed at like Elon which is a school that tries to get its yield rate up.

Thanks for the prompt response. I agree that UNC-Ch is probably my reach, and I do regret not taking a harder course load. I live in North Raleigh and attend a pretty competitive high school, so that is a partial concern. You were right that I will probably attend UNC-Ch for journalism, and maybe being editor in chief will help me in that regard. I’m still thinking about career choices and will try to talk to people from my choice professions over the summer.

I have a natural aptitude for computer science, but don’t know if I would get into State’s engineering programs with my math courses. I’ve heard of people applying to state without declaring their major and switching into engineering; is this necessary for me?

One choice is always applying to the FYC if necessary. However I think if you have taken AP Calc AB or even Pre-calc by the time you graduate you shouldn’t have that much trouble. It just might be a little harder once you go there.

Thanks. I am thinking more and more about engineering, but what you said about the math kind of worries me. By the end of next year, I will have taking AP Stat and Trigonometry. If I was accepted into State, do you think I should take some kind of precalc class over the summer (if I can find such a thing)? I don’t want it to be too over my head.

I mean, currently I am in AP Calc AB and the only thing that really transfered over from Pre-calf was some trig. Other then that I don’t remember too much that was necessary.

Yeah, that’s what I have heard for the most part. I’m going to talk to some more people, and see if I can talk to anyone at State about it. I’m sure that there will also be some kind of tutoring available during the freshman year anyway.

pierrelourens: you stated “I live in NC & will be going to college in state (money)…”
There is a small discount for in state students.

[Elon University // Financial Aid](http://www.elon.edu/e-web/admissions/FinancialAid/tuition.xhtml)

Thanks, Brave. Forgot to mention that Elon was probably the only private school I’d be interested in, providing I get enough financial aid. Thanks for the link, though!!

Elon is a fine school. I’m visiting within the month.

Yeah the main problem is courseload, and if you can get your SAT up a little higher that would be great. ECs and UW GPA are fine.
