Hi, a very worried high school senior here. I’m Korean, staying in the U.S with a Visa. It’s funny how my first language is English, though. Unfortunately, I’m worried out of my mind because I’m not ‘special’ in any way, shape, or form – I just like to write and read. I applied ED to CAS for English, but I’ve seen multiple discussions floating around with people with 4.1 GPA’s worrying about whether they’ll get accepted or not…I’m honestly terrified.
I’m from an upper middle class family, and moved between three countries and three high schools. I never completed a full year at a single school until I moved to the U.S, where I completed my junior year without moving.
GPA: In Korea: 3.7
In Brazil: 3.2-3.3
In the U.S: 3.5
My transcript doesn’t give me a full average due to the grading systems differing in each school. I’ve specified in the commonapp that I’ve had multiple interruptions in my education throughout the years due to my father changing jobs many times. I’d say that my unweighted combined GPA might be somewhere between a 3.4-3.5.
The high school I’m attending also has a different grading scale. Classes are limited to a 0.5 grading scale - which means 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0. There are no in-betweens. Getting a 94 will drop you to a 3.5 regardless, as a 4.0 at my school requires a 95 or above. You could drop to a 3.0 because you got a 90.
SAT: 2270 (Critical Reading 770 Math 710 Writing 790, Essay 12)
ACT: 33
AP Scores: AP US History - 5
EC: Action Against Hunger Outreach Officer
MUN Delegate
Varsity Soccer and JV Volleyball (in Brazil)
Varsity Swimming (in the U.S)
Volunteer in YPIE (Yonkers Partners in Education) for two years
Choir all four years + extra curricular choir based on audition
Participated with film team in Sundance festival
My essay revolved around how I took elements of the three cultures I experienced throughout high school to discover my interest in the English language and literature, as my parents originally wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer. But the moves helped me discover my interest, thus I applied to CAS for English.
Help me out and chance me, please? I’m terrified.
