I also have what I hope is a killer essay, and great recs from my Euro professor (who is also the head of history at UCLA), my film teacher, and precalc teacher. The film I'm submitting for my portfolio I've been told is great. What I'm concerned about the most is my GPA, my PSAT scores, and maybe my Lit SAT II score.

Thanks!
(good luck to everyone applying ED!)

I just got into Tisch Early Decision with SAT scores of only above 1800, so I guess your SAT scores are just fine. SAT IIs are not considered for tisch so dont worry about them. I did send my IB predicted grade which was very good (37) so I guess that was my GPA equivalent as an international student. However, I'm sure it was my portfolio that got me in since my film had a very good production value (dialogue-driven script, External boom mics, indoor lighting, set design, etc.) and it was all carefully planned. You seem to have a great background on film so you better show all of it through your portfolio film.

My film sounds very similar to yours--with regards to the lighting, sound, and design and extensive dialogue (none of that voiceover!). My biggest worry is my GPA though.

anyone else?

I can't chance you, cos I haven't the faintest idea what kind of standard they might be looking for. But I can tell you what I've done as well, so hopefully we can both get a little perspective, maybe discuss some aspects of the app (if you feel comfortable doing that, of course, since I'm appying Tisch Film RD as well).

I took a year off after graduating from junior college (our equivalent of 11th and 12th grade... not community college), so keep that in mind.

International Student - GCE A Levels, 3As, one Higher 3 Merit for Literature in English
SAT: 760V 760M 750W = 2270
Didn't take SAT IIs (they're not required for Tisch)
^ don't think you can do much with that info... here's the fun bit.

IT Club chairperson in Sec 3 and 4 (9th and 10th grade)
Air Rifle Club member in Sec 3 and 4
Over 100 hours as front-of-house staff at various theatre companies since JC1/11th grade
Considerable work experience: worked part-time at an automated movie rental shop, taught language arts for a term at my alma mater (their LA curriculum included film studies - early film history, Birth of a Nation, Empire of the Sun, basic documentary form, Eat Drink Man Woman -> this was what I taught when I was there), plus two temp jobs.
Interned at local theatre company: edited a promotional video for the re-run of a popular local musical. This video was screened at, among others, McDonald's outlets all over the country. (Mind you, we're a small country.)
Have directed/written five short films since 11th grade. #1 was screened at a local monthly amateur film showcase, #3 was selected to be part of S-Express: Singapore (a showcase of Singaporean short films) and travelled to two festivals abroad as well as the Asian Film Symposium, #4 will be screening publicly next month (I've just been told it will get coverage on national press and radio!) and I'm submitting #5 to film festivals now. #2 was a flop.

My problem is the reverse - my physical resources are limited, so production value is low, and over five films you can see a steady attempt at minimising inevitable weaknesses. The first film had very bad video quality (I shot it on a Handycam, sadly)... the third film, the most successful one, was animated, precisely to avoid the problem of low image quality. The fourth one had a good image but not the greatest sound - I rented a camera and mics, but I had a scoring problem - the music sounds juvenile. The fifth one is animated and silent. Here's hoping they appreciate it all the same.

If five seems like a lot (I completed them within a span of 18 months)... they're all very short films. #2 is the longest one, coming in at 7 minutes. I intend to cut the good parts from the five films together, accompanied with a short explanation showing my progression.

So... there're more details, if you're interested, we can continue this discussion via PM. I'd be glad to hear from another Tisch Film applicant because I'm working in a vacuum here... I haven't the faintest idea if I'm actually underqualified.

Hey, I think you have an awesome chance at getting in... I just got in ED. While my SATs were all in the 700s, my GPA was around 3.2, so you're definitely doing much better in that area. Also, I sent in what I thought was a pretty decent film, but I don't have nearly as much experience as you do with film stuff. I had awesome recs, I'm President of the Student Body at my school, and I have several other activities, but I was also suspended for a month a while back, so that kind of balances out. I think the MAIN factor in my getting in was my essay(s), so as long as your writing is decent, then you're definitely in.

Decent. Not guaranteed. I got in, but my numbers are a bit better. Ya, your GPA is the low point. I would stress though, goodluck!

How about for Cinema Studies? Similar stats to OP. I was told that a 3.5 GPA with a killer portfolio essay should be good enough.

Wait a minute…
Tisch doesnt review SAT IIs?
what if I choose to send them in? Will it be beneficial, and does this still apply even though they’ve changed the way and kinds of tests you can submit to NYU?

PS dont worry about the PSAT it counts for NOTHING (and you did way better than I did lol, I bombed that)

Tisch does review SAT IIs, in fact it requires them. They changed the rule for 2010 freshmen applicants. I was so mad haha!!
