Hi! so I plan on applying Early Decision to NYU's Core Program... this is the second year I believe in which you can apply directly to the program...

GPA: 3.76 W... school doesn't UW so i really don't know... if I had to guess I would say 3.4-3.5

SAT: 1670... I know it's reallly bad! but I know LSP Core Program is usually more lenient with numbers like SAT or GPA.. and I'm applying ED so maybe I still have a chance?

Recommendations:
1 Counselor
1 physics teacher
I attended NYU Precollege last summer and both of the professors I had are writing me a recommendation... Common app will only let me submit one along with my physics teacher one... and one of the professors is an actual professor and the other is a grad student.. so i wanna submit the professor one... but just in case for some weird reason I'm unable to do that i will submit the grad student one instead.

Extra Curriculars:
President/ founder of Comedy club (junior+senior year)
President/ founder of Engineering Club (senior)
Debate Team (senior)
Varsity Tennis (All 4 years)
Varsity Golf (Junior)
School Newspaper (Senior)
Secretary of Aspara Khmer Association (cambodian club basically... Senior)
Youth Soccer Coach (Junior+senior)
Volunteer at hospital (Junior+Senior)
After School teacher at Daycare (Freshman)
Attended NYU Precollege over the summer took 2 courses for College Credit.. A- in both classes... Also took a Pass/fail course and passed.

I wish I could chance you, but I absolutely have no experience with chancing!

I’m also interested in LSP for ED1, but I don’t know whether I should apply directly to LSP or if I should just do regular ED1 and hope that if I don’t meet the standards, I still have a chance to be placed in LSP? My SAT/GPA is not so high! :P

Yea that’s a tough decision… I battled with it for a while. But for me it all just came down to “what is my best chance of getting in to this school I desperately want to go to?” and LSP is really my only shot because of my SAT score. Is your score higher then mine? if so you might have a good LSP chance… I believe mine might be too low for even LSP

I still haven’t taken the Oct SAT yet (it’s this Saturday) but my past SAT score was 1740. I’m aiming for at least a 2000+ but at this point, I’m having a hard time improving my score and don’t know if I can even get to 2000 haha. I feel so conflicted! I’ll be happy to do LSP if it means I can attend NYU one day!

Yeah, definitely work on your SAT. I’m in LSP and I only had a 1980, but most of my friends had around the 2000s. I think I got into LSP because I wrote an essay about how much I loved small discussion-based classes (I didn’t even apply to it -_-) or something so that might help. Are you only applying to LSP because it’s “easier” to get into? If so, make sure you’ll really enjoy the classes they make you take - I personally despise it…

@kaliforyna What is your experience with LSP? What campus are you studying on? LSP sounds intriguing to me, so that is why I am interested and because my SAT/GPA isn’t high as CAS standards, I am hoping that LSP might be more lenient… but who knows! I want to go straight to CAS, I wouldn’t mind doing LSP as well if I get in.

@ Kilifornya Tbh that is why I’m applying… But have done research on the courses and stuff and I feel as though it would be worth it to eventually go to CAS. Do you think 1670 is like absolutely no chance at all for LSP or like maybe a chance with ED… Thanks for the post btw!!!

Paris - I think the stereotype is that LSP is “easier” to get in, but I’m not quite sure if that’s completely true… (secretly I kind of think it is true). I’ve heard of some people being complete idiots in the program (i.e., not knowing what a beaker is), but I’m sure there are also some people who are very talented but are still put in LSP. I might be biased against LSP because I didn’t ask to be put in the program, although I did write an essay about how much I liked small classes… but now I know I don’t. My LSP professors (I think most LSP professors are the same, but I’m not 100% sure) all care about my attendance. Two don’t allow any electronics, one doesn’t seem to mind. A professor got so angry with me after she saw me texting. No taking notes with laptops which upsets me a little because my high school was big on using laptops in class. We can only have 2 unexcused absences, and if you’re sick, you need a doctors note. Basically, to me, it’s worse than high school. A lot of reading so far. You learn a lot about history, art history, philosophy, stuff like that, if you’re into that. I’m in the Washington Square campus.

Dwarn - If you feel that way, then go for it! But I think 1670 is toooo low, sorry… But you do have good ECs I think. For ED… I talked to my college counselour last year, and she really talked me out of applying ED for my “reach” schools. I think that most people who apply EA or ED have really high SAT scores and good stats, so you wouldn’t really stand out as much in that group - or at least that’s what she told me.

Thanks, I’m still going to apply Early Decision… whether I go ED or RD the other applicants are gonna be strong… I rather go up against 3,000 strong applicants then 40,000. I just took my last SAT i can submit for the ED deadline… i don’t feel that great about it but hopefully I did well enough that a superscore of all three tests will be good enough for LSP.

@kalifornya wow so I really want to go to NYU and im applying ED i really want to be in gallatin but I feel like my only chance is through LSP. I know i can transfer into Gallatin . but I’d rather start there! Also, do you know if you can apply for a transfer AFTER freshman year? or do you DEF have to wait two years?

Stats: 1880 (waiting for retake score) on SAT, 3.76 GPA (weighted dont know unweighted). EC’s are NHS, 4 yrs tennis, 5 yrs town tennis, nyu precollege program, founder of club, lots of volunteer hours, youth group member, mock trial, service trips

Essay- i really love it and teacher recs are good too

classes- (junior yr) ap ush and ap lang and comp and (senior year) ap lit, ap meh and ap gov with four years of french (one year was p/f- junior .yikes) and then this year honors with good grades.

do i basically have no chance for gallatin? if i apply to gallatin do you think they would place me into lsp or should i just apply directly to lsp?

if i have weak grades and scores do you think itll be better to apply to CAS and hope for admittance to CAS or LSP or should I just apply directly to LSP?
