Chance me for NYU, please. I know, these are annoying.

Hi! I´m a senior in high school, and I’m drowning in the college admissions process right now. To get to the point, I really, really want to go to college in New York, and ideally, NYU. I posted this entire mess of my stats a year ago when I was a bit more oblivious to the process, but I think I can clear it up now in this thread.

SAT: I got a 1910 on the old one, which is clearly not good enough for NYU, so I took the new one and got a 1280, which is still not good enough. I retook it this month and actually studied this time, and I’m hoping to get a 1400+.

ACT: Without studying, I got a 28 (which is still not good enough, sigh). I just decided I would not take this again.

Subject Tests: I´m taking Literature in November, and Biology E and U.S History in December if my SAT score is solid. I wonder if 2 subject tests are enough? I´m not confident about the U.S History one.

Anyway, as you can see, I suck at standardized testing. I know it´s a huge part of admissions, so it´s been haunting me.

GPA: Weighted is 4.75, and Unweighted is 3.74 (Top 4%)

AP Scores: AP English Lang- 4, AP Statistics - 3 (I’m terrible at AP exams too.)

AP Classes: I’ve basically taken every AP class I could fit onto my schedule, but my senior schedule consists of:
- Painting Level 4
- AP Psychology
- AP Environmental Science
- AP Calculus AB
- Symphony Orchestra
- AP English Lit
- AP Government
- AP Macroeconomics (Took over the summer, Dual credit. Ended up with a 97.)

And I’m not planning to major in a STEM field (maybe dabble in natural sciences and some biology, but there’s no way I’m going into physics or anything like that. I suck at math.) I’m most likely wanting to enter CAS, Gallatin School, or LSP.

Here’s some extracurricular stats:

Taekwondo:

My passion, and I love it with my entire being. I’ve been doing it for 12 years so far, and I don’t plan to stop. I’ve expressed a talent and hardworking wit in this sport, and I’ve incorporated Taekwondo into many aspects.

  • 2012-2016 State and National USA Taekwondo Championships Gold Medalist
  • AAU 2016 National Championships, Gold Medalist - Grand Champion Award
  • 2016 Junior Olympics, Gold Medalist
  • Demonstration Team Captain 9th-12th Grade (Gold in 2014-2016)
  • Certified referee, judge, and coach in National level by U.S Olympic Committee
  • Current Instructor at 2 studios; Earned 4th degree last month and certified as master (Only in Taekwondo, I'm not some kind of martial arts genius.)

Whatever with the awards, the most I love about being an instructor is teaching. Obviously I teach at the studios, but I volunteer as the martial arts director for this academy that is composed of refugees from Congo, Nepal, etc. Teaching the refugees is something I hold dear, and probably the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. It’s truly the best.

Orchestra:

Well, I play cello. But I’m not Yo-Yo Ma #2. I’ve been in the varsity orchestra for 4 years, I’ve made first chair in All-Region twice, but I’ve never had the ambition to do the “All-State” thing. It’s really just not my thing. But I do love performing. So I play for a church every Sunday, and I play for a wonderful non-profit. Orchestra is really just something to relieve my mind on. And I’ve been an orchestra officer for 2 years, which is just helping setting up social events and the such. Not really that cool.

Um, and the other things I do are really cliche, I think.

  • National Honors Society, Treasurer.
  • National English Honors Society, Member. Founder of Literature Club and helped formation of Shakespeare Appreciation Club :)
  • Latin Club (or Junior Classical League if you like the fancy version), President 9th-12th grade.
  • Founder of my own non-profit organization, which basically collects books and art supplies to donate to places that need them. I really like reading and art!
  • I am a political science research assistant with a professor, and we do cool things. Lots of research.

I’m also in HOSA and Astronomy Club but I don’t really want to put them on my resume.

Idk if languages count for anything but I speak English, Korean, and am proficient in Latin.

So yeah, you know, there’s summer camps. I was the debate team captain at camp, bioethics class leader at CTY (idk why they did that but it happened. Also gave me a letter of recommendation? I guess that’s nice), and assistant teacher for a cello camp.

Now that the entire mess is over, I should say that my family can’t afford to fly me to New York and explore NYC and NYU, nor send me to any more camps. We’re in a bad financial situation right now, so all I can do is study for my subject tests and keep on doing what I’m already doing. Already filled out FAFSA. I’m in a family of 4, and our income is maybe 50k a year. Not sure what it is for 2016 though.

I’m from Texas, and I am a caucasian girl.

Wow, this is a long, long post. I’m going to end it here since it’s already embarrassingly long, but I hope I can get at least some feedback. Thanks to anyone who reads this  I really appreciate it.

You’ll get in for sure. GPA ooks great and SAT and ACT is at the average or a bit less but your EC’s and interest in the school will compensate for it . You’ll be fine

The post above seems too optimistic. You are a competitive candidate and have a reasonable shot. Good essays could swing your application positively just like bad essays would make it very tough to get in.

bump

I think you have a shot! Good luck.

one last bump!!!

I think it’s possible to get. But can you afford it without major loans? NYU gives notoriously little aid. Have you ever been in NYC? NYU doesn’t really have a campus but it’s in a beautiful part of the city.

I’ve never been to NYC, but I know it’s where I want to be. I don’t really mind that it lacks a campus, since the city makes up a big part of it. I’m trying to get as many scholarships I can, but I guess I can’t do much but dream

You seem pretty solid. your extracurriculars may make up for your test scores. I would recommend strengthening your ACT though because you are a white girl from texas. Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1930377-what-are-my-chances-for-usc-and-emory.html

I would say you definitley have a good chance, especially with your junior olympic stuff. It also depends on where you live and if there are other people in your area applying to NYU.

I do know there’s one boy who is applying for Tisch, and I’m not applying there. I bet there are a handful at my school applying to NYU. Hopefully that won’t be too much of an affect…

Edit: New Sat score is 1340. Really disappointed.

Hi, whoever said “You’ll get in for sure” is really misleading you. Yes, you have a solid chance because you have good ECs. And, 1340 SAT isn’t unrealistic for NYU, but it does drag your application down. And, someone mentioned this above, NYU may not be a good idea if you struggle financially… it’s very expensive.

Im really late but I would say everything is great except the new sat score. That might drag you down a bit but not dastically. My friend who is in nyu got around that at first but she studied alot at got it up to i think 1950-2000 (old sats). And she got alot of fin aid from them with that score and only about maybe 5-8 AP classes. As for the campus, yes when i visit her i notice its not much of a campus, so if your a school spirity person who likes to do alot school related things then this or other city schools may not be for you. I would recommend somewhere like penn state(shameless self promo :). But if you rather going out in the city than a campus vibe then it’d be good

A 1340 will probably get you into LSP; I’m almost certain you’ll get in there. For CAS or Gallatin, it’s more competitive, so your scores may hurt your application a bit. But your GPA and ECs are definitely up to NYU’s standards, so you do have a decent shot. Did you put CAS as your first choice, with Gallatin and LSP as your alternate schools of interest? If so, I’m pretty sure you’ll be accepted to one of them somehow. Good luck!
