chance me for NYU? please. will chance back

Hey guys, i am so nervous and was thinking if anyone could help me by telling me if i'd be in, a good candidate or if i'd probably get rejected. it would help me so much to hear your opinions. it would be amazing if you could help me..i am literally freaking out because NYU is definitely my top choice.

STATS:
-international student, living in germany going to an international school
-taking the IB diploma, with only honor classes
-hardest diploma available
-top 15% of graduating class
-GPA 3.4 uw, dropped a bit in senior year because the IB is exceedingly demanding and hard.. the classes are harder than AP classes.
-SAT = 570 CR, 620 math, 650 Writing
-take highest possible level of english literature at school
- in 10th grade, I took IGCSE exams (exams from Cambridge) and received the following:
French- A+
German- A+
English Literature- A+
English Language- A+
Math- B

RECOMMENDATIONS:
he 2 teachers I got to write them I am EXTREMELY close with, they're like best friends to me. One is my university counselor, she's really young and we are really close. The other is my german teacher, had him for 7 years and he knows me inside out. I saw the recs they wrote me and they are incredible. The last rec is from my IB coordinator, which is the highest position in my school. For some reason, she loved my sister and absolutely loves me, and she wrote my rec. Due to her importance, her rec was extensive and probably is very very good.

ESSAYS:
-English being my best subject at school (A+ average) and having worked on my essay till late at night with my english teacher, they were really good, i was very satisfied with all my essays. Also, i take English A1 HL in the IB, which is the highest possible english level.

Please let me know what you think! I'd be forever grateful.

bump bump!! please.

i’d say the only problem with your application is your SAT scores… they’re a bit below average, especially your critical reading school. BuT your extracurriculars, essays, and teacher recs sound amazing so i’d say you definitely have a good chance! (better than me at least lol)

care to chance me back? i go to an international school in Japan

GPA: 3.54 (weighted) (I know this is really low, but my grades have been improving in an upward trend. freshman: 3.02, sophomore: 3.55, junior: 3.86.
right now as a senior i got a 3.97 1st semester (I would’ve had a 4.2 but I got a C+ in AP Statistics. Not good, I know.)

AP Classes (at my school you can only take them starting Junior year): US History, English Language and Composition, Macroecon, Microecon, Japanese, Environmental Science, Statistics, French, and English Literature. So 9 total.

ACT Composite Score: 34
(English: 32, Math: 34, Reading: 33, Science: 35, Combined English/Writing: 29)

Extracurriculars:
-varsity swim team all 4 years and captain junior & senior year
-club called abot kamay all 4 years where we go to Thailand for community service and work at fundraising events during the school year
-treasurer of my school’s GSSA club
-worked for the past 2 summers as a camp counselor at a summer camp hosted by my school

Thanks so much for your time!

How can you chance each other if you don’t even understand your own chances? Both of you have items in your list that the common data set shows won’t be competitive based on the 25th to 75th percentiles for NYU. Either your SAT or your GPA is below the average typical for NYU. Your other stats are great but you first have to have the basics. If you are full pay maybe they will put you in a special pile.

i’m full pay… but i didn’t know that that would have any effect

NYU is need-blind. Ability to pay doesn’t factor into admissions decisions.

@hityy2

i think that from a academic perspective and knowing what i know about NYU, you have a better chance than me. academically, i think you a pretty well off, especially since your GPA has gone up that much. My GPA in freshman year and sophomore year were crazy good (3.85 and 3.8) and I only had As and Bs. Then, starting the IB diploma in junior year, things started getting tough and the 2nd year of IB (senior year) is crazy hard, and therefre my gpa dropped. But overall, it should still be a 3.3.

Moving on to AP classes, it’s good that you’re taking honors, just like I am. Schools like that stuff so much. Your ACT score is crazy good, you really shouldn’t be worrying. that’s basically like having a 2200 on your SAT… and those ALWAYS get into NYU.

Bring up some ECs, you have some good ones (volunteer and sports) but schools want to see more varied stuff like music and drama and especially, things you didn’t do in the summer as in job-like. But i think you have really good stats overall… good luck!

and @SnowflakeVT, that’s not really valid, OF COURSE school set their basics and receive applicants that are sometimes below… but schools look at the overall student and NOT only the grades. Believe me, if NYU receives an application with an asian chick with 4.0 GPA and 2300 SAT but with 2 ECs and crappy recs and essays, she won’t get in. If some kid comes on with average GPA (3.5ish) and okay SAT scores, but is a well-rounded student(lots of ECs, volunteering, shows very good personality, recs show good personality, and good essays), I am sure NYU would take the more well rounded student.

Anyhow, we’ll have to see, but I refuse to think NYU will completely reject JUST because some basics aren’t there. Academics are very important, but you have to look at the applicant as a whole.

Dandeelion is correct. NYU and others can fill their class with 4.0/2300+ students. The key is the balance between stats AND you. If you show the person you are in your application, you stand a much better chance of catching the attention of your admissions rep.

Also we dont know how the schools that international students attend compare- their 3.3 could be equivalent to our 3.8.
