So I recently applied to NYU Steinhardt to major in music technology. I've lived abroad my entire life in Senegal, Germany, France, England and Serbia, yet I also have American citizenship. I have a lot of experience in terms of my major and I've talked about my experiences as a musician etc in my essays. last summer i was accepted into NYU's summer program for music tech, so hopefully that should help.

My stats are:

SAT: 1930
CR: 600 Math: 680 Writing: 650

GPA (weighted): 4.41
My school doesn't provide us with an unweighted GPA as we are an IB school

I take only IB classes and have a predicted scare between 39-41

I take:
HL English
HL Psychology
HL Visual Arts
SL German B
SL Math
SL Environmental Systems and Societies

I took AP Music Theory in 9-10th grade as well

I only have 3 EC's:
Volleyball
Basketball
Jazz & blues

I think my essay will tell show them that i;ve done a lot outside of school so maybe that will balance my EC's out.

In addition I had to film an audition which I think I did pretty well in.

I’m no admissions counselor as I’m applying myself this year as an EDII applicant. But since it may be of some comfort to you, I’ll go ahead and say what I think!

First of all, being an all-IB student is very advantageous no matter what school you apply to (from what I’ve heard). Also, seeing that you have very good weighted GPA, this will more than likely turn odds in your favor. Now, you did mention that you go to schools outside of the U.S. and I’m pretty sure colleges are aware of the fact that many non-America schools weigh and grade differently from what is normally practiced here in the U.S so that could change things minimally.

Your lack of EC’s will be concerning to them. NYU, like many schools, reviews its applicants based on a holistic process so your GPA, course rigor, and test scores won’t get you into any college on their own, regardless of how high they are. But, I think your previous acquaintance with NYU through their summer program will be a strong sign to them of where your passion lies and the interest you have in the school itself.

Like you mentioned, if you’re confident that your essays provide ample explanation to your small holes, I think you have a great chance of getting into NYU. Good luck!
