Hello all, I am currently a HS senior who applied for NYU reg decision. I applied as a chemistry education major in Steinhardt as my first choice major and I also applied for College of Arts and Science…anyways here goes:
GPA: 3.55 (UW) 4.13 W
SAT: 2020 superscore (670M 620CR 730W)
ECs: participated in school orchestra and another orchestra outside of school (i play viola), tutored viola students, girl scouts, volunteer in hospital pharmacy…those are some of my bigger ECs; I do other stuff but dont feel like writing everything
ESSAYS: I think my personal statement is good…I wrote about music.
Here’s where I am worried…I am not sure if I want to pursue chemistry education or major in chemistry and do pharmacy afterwards. In my NYU essay I wrote about how i am applying to Steinhardt as a first choice and College of Arts and Science as a second choice in case I want to do pharmacy…will this be bad for my application since I wasn’t 100% decided on what I wanted?
Also I only have two years of a foreign language and I think that NYU likes three so I’m worried that this will hurt me a lot??
So far I have been accepted to St. John’s U for 6 year pharm.d but I don’t know if I will go since I am not 100% set on pharmacy–I think it will be better for me to explore my options.
Anyways, thanks for reading all of this!! Best of luck to all!
@co0kiez , your scores seem a little low especially your UW GPA, SAT is around average but not definitely on the low end. Your ECs seem to be mediocre. Are you a US applicant? I think if your essays recs are strong you still have decent chance to get in Steinhardt.
I think your SAT is fine, but it would be nice to know your class rank or percentile.
As for EC’s, you don’t have many, but if you presented them well and you’re passionate about them it should be fine, as quality > quantity.
As for your uncertainty, it should be fine, however you will not be admitted into CAS because Steinhardt is easier to get into and you chose it as your first choice. Worst case scenario you’ll just have to apply for internal transfer, which shouldn’t be too big of a problem if you keep your grades up.
Overall I’d say it’s a low reach, unless your 3.55 GPA somehow landed you in the top 5%. Good luck!
@adreamer22 Thanks for your honest response! I go to a competitive public HS in CA so my school does not rank.
@Chalamagne916 Thanks for the response–I appreciate the honesty. And yes, I am a US applicant.
