Hi guys, I'm gonna apply to NYU Steinhardt's music technology program and would like to know academically if i stand competitive at Steinhardt
Ill just get down to the basics and maybe one or two ECs/Awards

SAT (CR/M/W):
1st time: 560/610/610(10 essay)=1780
2nd time: 610/700/690(9essay)=2000---->studied my but off for this one..
Subject test
US History 690
Math 2 660

GPA Unweighted 3.694
and class rank of 146/596 barely top 25%

I will have taken 10 APs rest honors and i also have a couple of national latin exam awards
I am a praise team leader as well for my church youth group and a regular praise team drummer for the adult service

Well do i stand academically competitive? For the audition itself I am well prepared and will submit my own composed album for the supporting materials.

Thanks guys! :D

PS. I'm applying Early Decision 1 if that makes a difference.

I think it’s a definite match for you - maybe even a low match, especially if Steinhardt’s pulling for you. Maybe take another SAT II and see if you can top 700 on it, in case you get deferred? If AP Bio’s one of the APs you’ve taken, I’d say brush up on that and try taking Bio-E or M this fall. I’m applying for NYU-Steinhardt too next year, although as a viola performance major. Good luck!

D got accepted class of 2012 to Steinhardt for studio art (ED, but doesnt’ seem that ED gives much of a bump.)
She also had a 2000 SAT (720 CR, 610 M, 670 W): 29 ACT (35 Eng, 23M, 29 R, 27 Sci, 31 Eng/ Writing)

She had a 650 Bio SAT2 and a 620 in US History.

GPA was a 90.1 on a 100 point scale (translates to about 3.7) with honors/ APs in English and Social Studies. Also had honors bio and AP bio. Math grades were somewhat weak (80’s) and she dropped pre-calc in junior year and resumed math senior year with College Algebra.

Good recs. Good resume. Good essay. Talented in art and musical theatre/ choir. Many leadership roles.

Your profile seems similar. I think you are fine with your academics as long as you are ok for the talent portion of things. Remember talent is 50% of your acceptance–everything else is the other 50%.

Good luck!

But one question: should i retake the SAT and try to aim higher on CR or try to aim for a 700+ on a subject test

I’m a big believer in retaking the SAT as many times as you can tolerate/ schedule it. With score choice you can send the scores you want. I have seen both my daughters go up substantially on a section without any more practice. D was a 650/680/670 in Reading on other attempts, but went up to a 720 the last time she took it. She had done no other practice for that section in a year’s time (other than taking the actual tests.)

Older D randomly got a 780 in writing from 670.

I would not bother with the SAT 2 again. I’d definitely go with the SAT especially since your scores have been going up. I think you’re ok with a 2000, but you’d be MORE ok if you could eeek out some more points!
