Chance me for NYU Stern

Hi NorthernFront, I actually just made an account for this question because last year I was in the same place as you. I was full of excitement and felt that me and NYU would be perfect fits for each other. Sadly, I did not get in, and I’m a little worried about you too.

First off, I would highly recommend getting your weighted gpa up next year, to at least around a 4.3. Second, you want the courses you take and the extracurriculars you do to match what Stern is all about. Frankly, while all the stuff you’ve done is impressive, few of it relates to math/business, which I’m assuming is the area you want to major in if you want to go to Stern. I would recommend doing what you can to show that you love math/business/finance/whatever you want to major in if you want them to take you more seriously.

For comparison, I applied ED to Stern this year, my weighted gpa was a 4.2 and my unwieghted was a 3.6. My Sat score was 2100 with a 730 reading, 660 math, and 720 writing. The only rigorous math course I took in high school was AP Statistics, and my other APs were in Chemistry and Psychology.

I say this because while most of your courses/activities are more impressive than mine were, the gpa leaves something to be desired and I’m not getting much of a “I like math and business” vibe from your resume. My advice is to bring your grades up and do whatever you can to show that math is important to you and you are good at it. Because they want you to be a mean math machine, not a good writer or history buff. I hope this advice can help you out a bit, and hopefully you’ll have more luck with Stern than I did.
