Home state: Virginia

I'm graduating this summer as a junior so I don't have a senior year course load. I plan on volunteering a lot this summer and using my year off to work and volunteer. I also want to flesh out my art extracurricular so I might join some art groups or contests or something.

I would love to go to NYU but I know the financial aid is horrible. I really love big cities and I feel like I would do best in an urban area. I'm also looking at UVA, VCU, University of Washington, CUNY Hunter, and American University. VCU is pretty much my safety. Other suggestions would be highly appreciated!

NYU is a match
UVA is a match because In state
Rest are matches
You should get into all of those listed colleges. Check out Columbia, its in NY and gives good aid. Look into Northwestern in Chicago or Penn in Phili

NYU- Accept/Waitlist
UVA- Accept
VCU- Accept
University of Washington- Accept/Waitlist
CUNY Hunter- Accept
American University- Accept

Suggested Universities:
Safeties-
Temple U in Phili
PITT- Pittsburgh has a great urban campus and has fairly strong programs. I’d research their Honor’s College and merit based aid available.
University of Illinois- Chicago, I visited, it was really nice for a state school!
Target:
George Washington University in D.C.- I very urban campus, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting and has a lot of similarities and strengths as American
U of TX- Austin has a great urban feel and very strong academic programs. There Honor’s Colleges and Plan IIs provide an Ivy worthy education. Research this school!
Reach:
Have you considered Brown? Most Ivies (minus Dartmouth) are located in fairly big cities and will give great aid! Duke University is also located in the “Research Triangle” with two other major research universities, and they have pretty good aid!

Good luck! Looks like you are highly motivated and stand a pretty good chance among most of these schools!

UVA: match
NYU: match/high match
American: low match
Don’t know about the others

Thank you guys!!

My understanding is that UVa frowns on leaving HS early. For that reason I think they are a reach for you this year.

@FCCDAD Where did you hear this from?

"In particular, the Committee on Admission focuses on:

Excellent performance in a rigorous secondary-school program, including at least four units of English, four of college-preparatory mathematics, two of foreign language, one of social science, and two of science (engineering applicants must take three units of science, including chemistry and physics). These are minimum requirements; since most successful applicants exceed them, we recommend that candidates take the most rigorous academic program available in their schools, including at least five academic courses each year and AP, IB, and honors courses whenever possible."

It’s very hard to exceed the minimums of 4 units of English and 4 units of math, as most successful applicants do, in only 3 years.

Further, they say repeatedly that they want to see applicants who have taken full advantage of the most rigorous HS curriculum available, taking advanced courses whenever possible. A fourth year of HS is possible for almost everyone.

There’s nothing wrong with or objectionable about taking a gap year, working, or volunteering. The part that I expect they would have a problem with is forgoing a fourth year of academic preparation, without a compelling reason. The first thing they will ask on seeing your application is, WHY didn’t you take a fourth year of classes?

I suggest you ask DeanJ how they handle applications from people without 4 years of HS. She’ll be able to give a better answer than anyone here can.
