Hi all, I'm a high school junior who has just received his first standardized test scores (Nov SAT). I'm going to apply for out of state admission to the College of Liberal Arts as a history major. Can you guys honestly tell me what you think my chances for admission are based on my current profile.

GPA: 3.7 (w)

Rank: Probably top 30%

SAT: 1970 as follows 720 Critical Reading; 580 Math; and 680 Writing (I plan on retaking SAT in Jan and then ACT for the first time in Feb. 2015)

SAT II World History Subject Test: 680 (I'll take the US History Subject Test in June 2015)

AP World History: 5/5 (I plan on taking the US History & English AP Exam)

Hook: African-American Male

EC: Track freshmen year; Basketball manager sophmore year; and Cross Country junior year (I expect to be varsity next year)

Part-Time Employment: Since June 2014, I have had a part-time job working 10-12 hours a week at a fast-food establishment.

Thanks in advance for any advice or input that I receive from you guys.

Oops, my low math subscore is reflected in the post above, my aggregate SAT score is 1970 as follows: 720 Critical Reading; 580 Math; and 670 Writing.

You have a very good chance, and I think you’ll get in. Although your class percentile is on the lower side for admissions, everything else looks great – your overall test score is slightly above average for CLA, you’ve shown promise in your chosen major with the 5 on the AP World History and the high CR score on the SAT, and your grades are solid with all of your sports and job, plus they need more African American students there. Here’s admissions info for CLA: <a href=“Academic Profile of Fall 2022 Admitted Freshman Applicants by College | Office of Admissions”>http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/academics/profile.html My daughter has been accepted to UMN and right now it’s her top choice. Good luck!

Thanks mommyrocks, I dug a pretty good hole for myself in my freshmen year and that has negatively impacted my class rank and GPA. Hopefully the admissions committee will note my positive grade trend. I’m glad to hear that you believe that the AP score for World History will help me as I’m going to try get a 5 on the US History exam as well to overcome and/or counterbalance my low GPA/class rank.

1) you turned your situation around and admissions offices really like those kinds of stories. So be sure to include that information in your personal statement (the application will offer that option). The positive trend will definitely make your case as well.

2) You have time to bring up your GPA being that you are still a junior.

3) Your current rank is a tad low but your SAT is significantly higher than the CLA average and that’s a definite advantage. Plus, keep in mind that Admissions is going to look at difficulty of coursework taken and to be taken during Sr. year (such as honors and AP) not just class rank/GPA.

4) I have no definite knowledge of this for U of MN specifically but I would guess that being an African American male is a definite advantage given Minnesota’s relatively small minority population (on a % basis) as well as the fact that the majority of college applicants is currently female. Being an OOS applicant is going to help you as well. Here are some stats at CLA for last year’s freshman class:
21.2% are students of color
58.4% are women
64.4% are Minnesota residents
Everything I’ve read about college admissions is that they like an interesting and diverse freshman class that is well rounded overall. Therefore, every “hook” a particular student has is going to count for something.

5) Holding down a part-time job while in school and taking challenging courses is pretty impressive.

You seem to know what you want to do and have the scores to back it up. Good luck with your high school career and with admissions.
