Applied to Cal, LA, SD (TAG), Davis, Irvine

Other philosophy majors are welcome to post their stats here too and discuss about transferring.

You are in! UCB accpeted something like 60% of their philosophy applicants, and I’ guessing your GPA is above the average of those accepted.
i’d say
93-93% Berkeley
95-98% L.A
99-100% all others

Applied for Fall 2010: UCLA, Berkeley, SB TAG ,SD TAG, USC

EC: Philosophy tutor at my CC, High School basketball coach
2 W’s, 1 D.

4 Phil classes taken : 4.0 in philosophy classes

^ Eshug1 your stats are almost similar to mine, your chances should be as good. You guys are really generous on the percentages, don’t you guys think my chances will be lower due to the fact that I am an international student?

They are really increasing the amount of international students here at Berkeley. They have been having articles about that all the time in the student publication. I think you have a very good chance at Berkeley… good luck!!!

Here’s one article that came out in the Daily Californiana (Berkeley’s student-run newspaper):

“Campus officials have said UC Berkeley plans to generate an extra $60 million in additional revenue each year by increasing nonresident students to 20 percent of the total undergraduate population.”

wait…they still count as international even if they have studied at a ccc for two years? that is kinda harsh. i mean this kid has WAY more business being at cal or la than some of the ccc students i saw get in last year. BOOOO

actually your chances are higher than you think for being international…because of the budget cuts they have already said that they are more likely to admit out of state/international students because their tuition is nutts. so by using that extra money theyll make up for the budget deficit

3.57 UC-transferable GPA. Philosophy major.
IGETC done at the end of Fall 09.
excellent upward trend (1.0 -> 3.57) 4.0 this semester in 18 units.
pre-reqs done (none articulate at my CC)
essays 8/10.
150 volunteer hours at an assisted living center and tutoring kids.
Sociological Research project on drugs and their effects on women between 18 and 35.

Applied to Berkeley Philosophy. (Applied to UCLA/UCSD TAG/Davis TAG as a Psyc major).

Do you guys think I have a good chance? Thanks so much.

berkeley is a close call. There were people on the forum with 3.55 who got in LA but not Berkeley so depending what your GPA is after this semester, if you have like a ~3.65 then you should have a good shot but not for sure.

I have very similar stats so I hope we both get in!

Would you rather go to Berkeley for Phil or UCLA for Psych?

Eshug, it’s actually really close. My interests lean to Psychology, but Berkeley is literally 30 minutes away from home and a bit more prestigious. If I were to get into both, I would probably go to Berkeley and try to double major in Phil and Psych.

given budget cuts, its impossible to tell if being international will help you or not, i mean they said they would admit more, but in a pool of all the international students applying, do you stand out? (atleast in ur major)

…but I have to disagree somewhat with some of the assessments I have read.

First, yes, being an international student does put you at a disadvantage in general, compared to california residents, but attending a California Community College certainly gives you a HUGE leg up over OTHER INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS (and if I’m not mistaken, possibly out-of-state students as well). I have MOST DEFINITELY read this somewhere on either Cal’s website or UCLA’s website.

Secondly, you’re not applying to a super-competitive major like Biz-Econ, Bio or Engineering. So even if your “preference level” is not as high as that for california residents, you should still be in pretty good shape.

Thirdly, you have an very good gpa, even if you are held to a much higher standard (according to the stats for your major).

Combine those 3 factors, and I should say your chances are about 70%-80% for acceptance. (Probably at the lower end of this range for Cal and the higher end for UCLA)

Honestly, dont worry so much about what lakerforever says. He doesn’t work in admissions at LA or Cal, so he doesn’t really know, he is just making up these percentages. You may be an international student, but your gpa is strong and your pre-reqs have been completed. It honestly sounds like you have a good shot at getting into both schools
